Alyssa Milano's Stunning Style Transformation

It wasn't long after Alyssa Milano hit Hollywood in the mid-1980s that she started taking her style seriously. Playing Samantha Micelli on 1984's "Who's the Boss?" led her to adopting the biggest crazes of the era, and in doing so, develop a lifelong love of fashion. Though this definitive decade gave her the chance to embrace things that people found attractive in the '80s and nail them like a true it-girl, she would soon come to be more selective with trending styles, standing apart from the crowd to cultivate her own signature image. Part of her unique look is about aesthetics, but her beliefs have also influenced her sartorial journey.

"Fashion is an important form of storytelling ... [which is] the most critical part of activism," she told Page Six in November 2023. "I'd argue that storytelling, whether through art, fashion, music, writing or personal narratives, is the only thing that really moves us forward." At the time, the "Charmed" alum was promoting her new line in partnership with jewelry brand Awe Inspired. "The fashion industry has so much power," she added. "It influences almost every aspect of our lives ... It's imperative that the industry uses that power responsibly, to move us forward rather than hold us back."

Her spearheading of the #MeToo movement in October 2017 led to a change in Milano's go-to style, making way for practical and powerful pieces alongside her favored feminine dresses and playful accessories. But no matter what decade she's in, the TV star loves making a splash with her wardrobe, summing up her fashion vision for the outlet in a few simple words: "You can't go wrong when you're wearing a statement."

1984-1997: Alyssa Milano was all over '80s and '90s fashion trends

Alyssa Milano was still a tween when she landed her life-changing role on "Who's the Boss?" in 1984. But she paid careful attention during the decade of big hair and shoulder pads, and by the end of it, she was rocking the biggest trends like a pro. This was abundantly clear at a production party for the TV movie "Crash Course" in 1988, when she had her hair teased to oblivion and rocked a bright-blue set featuring the era's popular silhouette of skirt over leggings.

As she moved through her teens and into early adulthood, she built her wardrobe around many of these ultra-popular crazes. Along with the big hair — which was sometimes even crimped — she sported graphic tees, scrunchies, and shoulder pads like any '80s it-girl should. "I look back now and say, 'What were we all thinking?' when I see some of those outfits and that hair," she admitted in her Page Six interview. "But I certainly don't regret them."

When the '90s came around, she didn't miss a beat transitioning to the aesthetic of a new decade. Moving many of her '80s staples to the side, Milano made room for chokers, sheer stockings, dark lips, leather pants, micro purses, overalls, corsets, and straight-leg denim. She also rocked the tartan-style plaid pants that were made famous in the era by the likes of Jennifer Aniston. As her style transformed over these years, Milano developed a love of pretty statement dresses, but her vibe in the 1990s was a touch darker. Her 1992 MTV VMAs look of a black dress with a netted neckline and gloves marked the vampiest point of her fashion journey, perhaps prophesizing that her career was about to take a witchy turn.

1998-2006: Alyssa Milano's wardrobe gets a charming update

In 1998, Alyssa Milano was introduced to a new generation as secret witch Phoebe Halliwell on the WB show "Charmed," which ran until 2006. While the show followed Phoebe and her sisters fighting evil every week, their wardrobes were increasingly front and center, and Milano had no choice but to rise to the position of style star in the real world, too.

As she had done in the '80s and early '90s, she embraced a lot of noughties trends during this time. In her first few years on the show, she kept up with staples from the previous decade, like lace-trim slip dresses, but soon she was all over Y2K-approved body jewelry, hip huggers, and crop tops. Around the turn of the millennium, she dyed her dark locks a honey blond, continuing to don noughties' pieces like baggy cargo pants. At the WB network's 2002 summer party, she went full '00s with a strapless plum crop top and flared pants, which were both things people found attractive in the aughts. Faded denim also became one of her go-tos during this era, along with newsboy caps that matched her newly cropped hair. She debuted her confident pixie for the sixth season of "Charmed," which aired in 2003, and maintained this edgy 'do for the "Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star" premiere, where she wowed in a black dress with a seriously plunging neckline.

Consistently throughout the early to mid-noughties, Milano rocked hair accessories that weren't necessarily trending, but gave a glimpse into her unique style that was distinct from the "hot" list. No matter the decade, she seems to gravitate towards feminine pieces and simple fashion accessories that make a statement. Combined with her signature red lip, this gave her aesthetic a timeless and unique feel.

2007-2010: Alyssa Milano closes out the noughties finding her own style

Nobody can make the argument that Alyssa Milano can't keep up with trends. But by the end of the noughties, the TV star found the confidence to cultivate her own style that wasn't necessarily dictated by the runways. We saw this at a Golden Globes after-party in 2007, when she wore a dazzling champagne midi with sequin embellishments. Then at the Entertainment Weekly Pre-Emmy Celebration in September 2008, she rocked an avant-garde number that showed the girly side of her style ethos with floral detail, balancing it with the leather-look waistband and sheer fabric that highlighted her inherent edginess. She stayed true to her love of fun hair accessories during this era, while still paying some attention to trends. Not even Milano could avoid the skinny jean tidal wave set to fully hit the 2010s, though she typically paired hers with her go-to statement tops.

In 2009, Milano tied the knot with talent agent David Bugliari, wearing a custom strapless gown with all the little touches that made it her own: an elaborate headpiece from Maria Elena, structural draping, and a maximalist embellished white belt. She certainly joined the ranks of celebrities who stunned in Vera Wang wedding dresses!

The following year, Milano continued her commitment to honoring her own style, which is both playful and intentional, prioritizing color and unique, standout details. For an April gala in Hollywood, California, she went with a strapless terracotta mini, accessorizing with layered bracelets and her hair pulled back into a power pony. For the VH1 Do Something Awards that year, she called on sequins once again with a bold metallic top teamed with high-waisted pants and bold green pumps.

2011-2019: Statement dresses star in Alyssa Milano's lookbook

Perhaps even more so than contemporary trends, the ebbs and flows of Alyssa Milano's personal life have had a huge influence on her wardrobe. In August 2011, she welcomed her first baby, Milo Thomas, and her maternity fashion during the start of the year featured understandably toned down styles, notably black dresses and garments with classic empire waists. "I think dressing for proportion is really, really important," she told ET in February 2016 of her maternity approach. "So, if you're a little wider, you have to pick lengths that work with your width."

In 2012, she was back to her bolder dress styles, which generally reflected her own creativity and individuality rather than trending silhouettes. At the 2013 Golden Globes, she wowed with a yellow satin dress, turning heads with its vibrant shade and age-defying train. Before she welcomed her second baby, Elizabella Dylan, in September 2014, she showed off her styling prowess at New York Fashion Week in a plunging satin top with a statement bow. Marrying sexy and preppy, she paired it with an academia-coded black miniskirt, sheer stockings, and a crispy white shirt and tie. That's certainly one iteration of the academia trend you'll want to master.

In the next few years, she was back to her long-lasting love for eye-catching embellished and body-hugging dresses , but she was still rocking trending skinny jeans. The UNICEF Snowflake Ball in November 2018 saw her in a sheer off-the-shoulder gown adorned with gold leaves for the ultimate Aphrodite moment. The following year, she pushed the boundaries with violet tones in her hair, and seemed to be throwing it back to her '90s vampy style with a one-shoulder black-and-red dress worn to the Golden Globes.

2020-Present: Alyssa Milano balances power with femininity

Alyssa Milano's time in the public eye throughout the 2020s has centered around her activism following 2017's #MeToo movement. There's nothing that could make the "Who's the Boss?" alum abandon her alluring dresses completely, but her street style did shift during the early '20s to a more practical, powerful aesthetic. At a women's march in October 2021, she showed off this revamped image with washed-out gray cuffed jeans, a printed top, and gray-and-white combat boots. Her looks typically featured military style jackets, black jeans, and slogan T-shirts during this time. Even when she did reach for girly pieces, she brought a harder edge with combat boots and stiff structural blazers. Mini hemlines seemed to have been left in the past, though saturated color was still a go-to for the sitcom star.

Once you've embraced skinny jeans, it can be hard to ever truly get rid of them, but Milano did welcome baggier denim in line with modern trends in 2022. Following the Barbie pink wave of 2023, she rocked a fuchsia power suit to the "Sherri" Talk Show in 2024. Nodding to passing crazes like this shows that she does acknowledge what's trending, but never at the expense of her personal style.

In January 2026, Milano seemed to come full circle with a throwback to quintessential '80s silhouettes. She was photographed at the "Balance: A Perimenopause Journey" premiere in Los Angeles, wearing a white round-neck top with pearl details and retro shoulder pads. She teamed the vintage-inspired piece with a matching pencil skirt and a pearl belt, paying tribute to a classic look from the decade in which she rose to fame. Not only can she call upon current crazes, but she can easily bring '80s trends back to her 2026 outfits to truly represent her individuality.
