Malcolm In The Middle Star Jane Kaczmarek's Gray Hair Transformation, In Photos

Jane Kaczmarek is one of the celebrities who proudly show off their gray hair, but her journey to this point has been anything but typical. While many famous older women gradually go gray due to age, the "Malcom in the Middle" star's transition had less to do with getting older and more to do with one very specific decision she made. It all started in 2017 when she was cast as Mary Cavan Tyrone in the play "Long Day's Journey into Night."

The actor shared the story on "The Real Daytime" talk show in 2018. "[Mary Cavan Tyrone] is a morphine addict, this is 1913 ... and her hair turns white. And I didn't want to wear a wig because wigs are like, you got a dog sitting on your head," she said. Instead, she turned to her colorist to take her hair from brown to white. "And then the play ended, and I kept waiting for my brown roots to grow in. And I kept waiting, and I kept waiting, and it was like, I don't have brown hair anymore!" Beyond the surprising story, what's even more intriguing is the transformation in photos, which clearly demonstrate Kaczmarek's sudden jump from brunette to gray. 

One of the earliest photos from Jane Kaczmarek's career is from the film "The Heavenly Kid," and it shows her natural, gorgeous, wavy brunette hair. The actor was 30 years old when the movie was shot in 1985, and fashion was very much "bigger is better" when it came to hair. While Kaczmarek's hair might not have been as big as we've seen in some of the major '80s style icons, her future hairdos would never come anywhere as close to this in volume, not to mention the dark color.

Jane Kaczmarek's real-life hairstyle in the 2000s was pretty similar to her hair as Lois in "Malcom in the Middle." She started the first season in 2000 with bangs and shoulder-length hair with some curl to it, and switched between a lob with bangs and a chin-length bob with layers and bangs throughout the show's seven seasons. She also alternated between straightening her hair and letting some of its natural waviness show. In 2006, she attended Comedy for a Cure in Hollywood, California, sporting a layered lob styled almost identically to the cut she'd worn on "Malcom in the Middle" that year.

By 2016, Jane Kaczmarek was 61 years old and aging exceptionally well. She still kept her hair styled in a shoulder-length lob with layers, but the major difference was the change in the intensity of her hair color. The uncoordinated locks gave way to a more refined style that suits her features and looks intentionally styled. This bold acceptance has social media fans praising her hair choices.
