These Soap Stars Are Proof That Going Gray Doesn't Have To Be Boring

Some people consider going gray a hair death sentence; they assume embracing white, gray, or silver tresses is somehow blah and boring. But others are showing that gray hair is far from dull (both literally and figuratively), and that includes some of the biggest soap opera stars — or actors who got their starts on soap operas. "General Hospital" star Jane Elliot is proof that transitioning to gray hair doesn't have to be boring, but she's just the tip of the daytime iceberg when it comes to  current and former soap stars who have embraced their silver strands.

It appears that these actors, from the likes of "Days of Our Lives," "Doctors," and "General Hospital," have transitioned to gray the right way with these tried-and-true methods, which admittedly includes patience, and at times, perseverance. But as these pics prove, the payoff is worth it: Each of these women exudes elegance and vivacity in spades. In fact, going gray never seemed so full of life.

Deidre Hall has kept her signature lob cut, but let her hair go gray

If you've ever watched "Days of Our Lives," then you've undoubtedly seen Deidre Hall as Dr. Marlena Evans, who's appeared on more than 5,300 episodes of the show. Since her debut on the soap in 1976, she's aged elegantly, and that includes embracing her gray hair. In 2023, she told Yahoo! Life, "I think we're beautiful at all ages — and if gray is a part of maturing, then there it is." Hall has kept her signature shoulder-length cut with long, soft layers and bangs, which was still blond in 2010, as she's let her gray grow in.

Tamara Tunie's hair has evolved with her characters

Tamara Tunie, with her gorgeous full curls, has been a fan favorite since her long-running "As the World Turns" stint, which ran from the late '80s and '90s until 2007. Fans are particularly vocal about the gray cascade she's been sporting on "Beyond the Gates," which aired in 2025. Tunie has continued to show how versatile and interesting her gray hair can be, including at a Broadway opening in April 2026 with a high braided ponytail. "She rocks the hell out gray hair! It's beautiful!" one fan wrote on a Facebook board devoted to Tunie's tresses.

Amber Tamblyn has embraced her silver strands in her early 40s

Most people would recognize Amber Tamblyn from "The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants" and "Joan of Arcadia," but this star spent six years on "General Hospital" from 1995 to 2001, the year she was photographed at a party in LA with long brown hair. In April 2026, at age 42, Tamblyn posted a photo to Instagram to promote embracing "imperfections," including her gray hair. We'd argue that it's far from "imperfect," but we understand the sentiment that Tamblyn was going for and applaud her embracing the grays that are coming in, serving as natural highlights in her hair.

Salma Hayek's subtle silver is sending a clear message

Salma Hayek, who turns 60 in September 2026, was the star of Mexican telenovela "Teresa" from 1989 to 1990. She has kept her tresses long and thick throughout her career, as they were in 1994. Recently, the "Frida" star has shown that she's confidently joining the group of celebrities who proudly show off their gray hair by letting silver pieces grow in. At the 2026 French Open in May, she rocked very minimal gray strands among her thick black curls, mastering a sexy salt-and-pepper look.

Kathy Bates has aged beautifully with her silver strands

Kathy Bates' long Hollywood career has taken her to high places. She started with a bit role in "The Doctors" soap, where she had dark-blond curls, eventually earning her award-winning turn in 1990's "Misery." She attended the LA premiere for that iconic project with brown curls. Nowadays, she has a starring role on "Matlock," where she's showing off her elegant gray hair. At the AARP Movies for Grownups Awards in January 2026, she looked particularly striking with her full hair brushed away from her face.

Susan Flannery wears her gray hair in a flattering style

From 1987 until her character's death in late 2012, Susan Flannery was a doyenne of "The Bold and the Beautiful," in the role of Stephanie Douglas Forrester. While she was known for her dirty-blond locks in the '80s, she transitioned beautifully to gray, as pictured in 2011 at the Daytime Emmys. Wearing her hair brushed up and away from the face served to make her thinning hair look fuller and more voluminous, while also elegant and strong.
