10 Heartwarming Throwback Pics Of Debbie Reynolds And Daughter Carrie Fisher

Although Hollywood has produced many mother-daughter duos, there's something undeniably special about Debbie Reynolds and her daughter, Carrie Fisher. So much so that despite their tumultuous relationship, they eventually ended up having houses on the same property later in life, and when Fisher died on December 27, 2016, at the age of 60, Reynolds followed just one day later at the age of 84. "My mother wouldn't have it any other way," Reynold's son and Fisher's brother, Todd Fisher, told ABC's "20/20" in December 2016. "[Reynolds] didn't die of a broken heart," he. "She just left to be with Carrie."

But it took years for these two icons to find themselves on the same page, much of which probably had to do with how similar they were, both fearless in how they navigated the world around them. While Fisher was always candid about her struggles with mental illness, having been diagnosed with bipolar disorder at 24, Reynolds had been a vocal advocate for reproductive rights, sharing her story about needing an abortion before the landmark decision of Roe v. Wade in 1973. In other words, the apple doesn't fall too far from the tree with these two.

Reynolds and Fisher's unique relationship is one worth celebrating. They may have taken the long road to get to where they were before they passed away, but that's sometimes necessary. So put on Fisher's iconic Leia space buns and get ready for a heartwarming walk down memory lane.

Debbie Reynolds goofing around with a baby Carrie Fisher

In 1959, Debbie Reynolds found herself a single mom after her husband and Carrie Fisher's dad, Eddie Fisher, left Reynolds for her best friend, Elizabeth Taylor. To this day, it's still considered one of the biggest scandals to ever happen in Hollywood. With her ex-husband gone, Reynolds would sometimes bring her kids to work, resulting in someone snapping this moment between her and two-year-old Carrie on the 20th Century Fox set of "Say One for Me." Reynolds looks absolutely elegant in a belted tweed shift, while Carrie wears a classic toddler's dress.

When this photo of Debbie Reynolds and Carrie Fisher was taken in 1972, Reynolds was the only famous one at the time, as evidenced by her old Hollywood take on fashion that consists of a fur coat and a pair of sunglasses in her hand. Little did either of them know, but in just three years, Fisher would be cast in 1977's "Star Wars," immediately earning intergalactic levels of fame. Princess Leia would become an icon and a perfect Halloween costume for brunettes during the decades to come. Needless to say, Fisher's life would never be the same again.

Debbie Reynolds and Carrie Fisher having a chat in New York City

Despite their generational differences and their completely opposite sense of personal style, both Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds knew that red lipstick is always a good idea. Taken in 1983 in New York City, the mother and daughter duo are definitely having a lively chat, as proven by their facial expressions and Fisher's gestures. They're both looking very 1980's, with Reynolds wearing a satin jacket with puffed sleeves, while Fisher wears a multi-colored cardigan with dangly turquoise earrings.

In January 2015, Debbie Reynolds and Carrie Fisher attended the 21st annual Screen Actors Guild Awards looking fabulous. Reynolds wore a gold bedazzled dress with a matching jacket, while Fisher wore a black lace gown. Fisher embracing Reynolds is a testament to how far they'd come. "It took like 30 years for Carrie to be really happy with me," Reynolds told People in 1988, adding that she had to work at it. "I've always been a good mother, but I've always been in show business ... I don't bake cookies, and I don't stay home."

Debbie Reynolds and Carrie Fisher rocking black pantsuits for a celebrity event

When you see Debbie Reynolds and Carrie Fisher at events hugging and kissing each other, it's hard to believe that there was a period of 10 years where the two didn't talk to each other at all. But in August 2003, when they attended the 2nd Annual 'Runway For Life' Celebrity Fashion Show, and Fisher cuddled up to her mom, all appeared to have been forgiven. For the event, both women chose to keep things casual, opting for black pantsuits. Unlike Reynolds, who went full monochromatic, Fisher wore a colorful shirt under her jacket.

Debbie Reynolds and Carrie Fisher never feared showing love to one another. In this adorable picture, Reynolds has her hair and makeup done in her usual style as she's bent over her daughter. She's leaning in to kiss Fisher's forehead — or maybe she already did, based on their warm smiles. It's a beautiful moment that, thankfully, will live on forever since it was captured by the camera. This picture was taken at Fisher's Los Angeles home in 1990 for an exclusive photoshoot of her and Reynolds by Michael Tighe.

Debbie Reynolds and Carrie Fisher celebrating Fisher's 2010 documentary Wishful Drinking

If you're a fan of celebrity memoirs, but you've never read 2008's "Wishful Drinking" by Carrie Fisher, then it's time to add it to your TBR list. Funny in a way that only Fisher could be, "Wishful Drinking" was a one-woman show that was turned into a book, then turned into an HBO documentary in December 2010. For the premiere, of course, Fisher's mom, Debbie Reynolds, was by her side, rocking one of the most low-maintenance short haircuts for women over 70, while Fisher wore her hair in a layered auburn bixie.

Carrie Fisher leaning into Debbie Reynolds at the 2011 Emmys

When going through the photos of Debbie Reynolds and Carrie Fisher, there are many moments where Fisher leans into Reynolds with her eyes closed in what appears to be both comfort and gratitude. In 2011, when Reynolds and Fisher attended the Emmys, Fisher was photographed doing that heartwarming and heartbreaking move yet again. As usual, Reynolds took the bedazzled route for the occasion, wearing a black and gold pantsuit with a matching jacket. Fisher went more casual, with a cobalt blue cardigan over a black shift dress.

Debbie Reynolds, Carrie Fisher, and Billie Lourd together in 2011

It goes without saying that we lost two monumental icons when Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds passed away on December 27 and 28, 2016, respectively, but they did leave a legacy behind: Fisher's daughter, Billie Lourd, who seems to be as witty and talented as her mom and grandmother were. In June 2011, all three women attended the Debbie Reynolds' Hollywood memorabilia exhibit. To no one's surprise, they were all smiles while looking every bit the Hollywood glamour queens they are.
