Brenda Song's Early-2000s Makeup Mistakes Still Make Her Cringe
Those who were around during the Y2K era know that it was full of makeup experimentation that didn't always age well. As someone in their early 20s at the time, who eventually became a professional makeup artist, I know full well how cringey some of the looks were. From pencil-thin brows to a failed glossy lid attempt, which were things people actually found attractive in the aughts, I can see where my makeup mistakes went horribly wrong. So, when Brenda Song revealed her biggest beauty regrets, I totally understood. While sharing her current routine with Merit, the former Disney star told fans, "I have this picture of me on a red carpet from like, 2006, where I have bright pink magenta blush. It literally haunts me in my sleep. How did anyone let me out of the house like that?"
Perhaps Song was referring to her 2005 Emmy Awards appearance, where she did indeed show up with bright pink blush that was heavily applied. It seemed she had a case of blush blindness, but you can embrace rosy cheeks without overdoing it. I love underpainting, which is applying liquid blush under the foundation to give an airbrushed effect. With this method, you can use a stronger color, as the base will diffuse the intensity of the pigment. Then, if you need a bit more color or want to create more dimension, add a pop of powder blush on top. Heavy blush wasn't the only early 2000s beauty blunder Song made, and unfortunately, her other slip-up was a bit more permanent.
Brenda Song overplucked her eyebrows during her Disney days
Folks who grew up in the '90s and early 2000s can totally relate to Brenda Song's eyebrows, or lack thereof. While sharing her makeup routine with InStyle, she stated, "I made the mistake ... in early 2000s and let someone pluck them all away, so I have none. So all this is fake." The "Running Point" star added, "One of the things that I learned in my early Disney days, or just in general when I was younger, do not overpluck your eyebrows."
Luckily, there are so many great brow products that mimic real hair. While Song suggested the Anastasia ArchiBrow pencil, you can use any one with a super fine tip. One of my faves is the NYX Micro Brow Pencil, which I use personally and on my clients. I make upwards strokes on the front part of the eyebrows and gradually fill in the rest. There are many ways to experiment with your eyebrows that will change your whole aesthetic, but please just refrain from overplucking them — and I'm sure Song would totally agree.
