Sally Field Admitted Her First Date With '70s Boyfriend Burt Reynolds Was 'All A Blur'
Sally Field has lived many lives on screen, but her real dating life has also been quite a rollercoaster. Not only has the "Forrest Gump" star been married and divorced twice, but in the '70s, she famously sparked up a romance with film icon Burt Reynolds. The two met while filming their 1977 movie "Smokey and the Bandit," and the resulting fling between them was anything but boring. Reynolds was already a big star at the time, while Field had divorced her first husband, Steven Craig, just a few years prior. The Hollywood romance that developed between the two actors and their undeniable chemistry onscreen ignited a media frenzy at the time, and even Field has said that the way it all happened was quite the whirlwind.
While reflecting on her first date with Reynolds on the "Talking Pictures" podcast in June 2026, Field admitted that her first time going out with Reynolds was "all a blur," considering how nervous she was at the time. "I thought I would pass out," she recalled. "I only know how to be a clown when I'm nervous. And, you know, we went ... Did we even go to dinner? Yeah, we went to dinner," she tried to remember. "I just was nervous. It was all just a blur. Like, what was I doing there?" But despite her initial jitters, Field certainly made an impression on Reynolds, marking the start of their five-year, on-and-off relationship. They eventually parted ways for good in 1982, and Field went on to marry her second husband, Alan Greisman, in 1984, though they would end up divorced ten years later. After two divorces, Sally Field's thoughts on marriage now are sure to make you laugh.
Sally Field once called Burt Reynolds her worst on-screen kiss
40 years after her whirlwind romance with Burt Reynolds ended, Sally Field outed the late star as the "worst on-screen kiss" she'd ever had. Field was asked to dish the dirt on her worst on-camera smooch during an appearance on "Watch What Happens Live" with Andy Cohen in December 2022, and she didn't hold back in giving a brutally honest answer. "Okay, this is gonna be a shocker. Hold on, folks," she said before name-dropping Reynolds. "It was just not something he really did very well ... a lot of drooling was involved," Field revealed. It's no wonder that in her later years Field joined the ranks of other celebrities who have embraced being single!
Prior to her romance with Reynolds, Field had been married to Steven Craig for more than five years, and together they welcomed her two oldest sons, Peter and Eli Craig. They divorced in 1975, freeing Field up just in time for her complicated love story with Reynolds to begin. After they called it quits five years later, Field found love again with second husband Alan Greisman, with whom she welcomed her third son, Sam Greisman. Sam came out as gay around the age of 20, which is why Sally Field's advocacy for the LGBTQ+ community has always been personal. The Oscar-winning actor divorced Sam's father in 1994, and hasn't been married since.
