Sophia Loren Waged 'War' Against Detractors Who Said She Should Feel Self-Conscious About Her Nose
Known as a star from the Golden Age of Hollywood, Italian actor Sophia Loren has been in the limelight for long enough to know all of Tinseltown's beauty secrets. In fact, Sophia Loren swore by an old-school beauty trick that many still use, and over the years, Loren has shared glimpses into her routines and beauty preferences. The "Two Women" star admitted that many made her feel self-conscious about her nose, among them her two-time husband, Italian film producer Carlo Ponti Sr.
Per Yahoo!, in 1979, Loren opened up about how her partner suggested she get her nose done. "When my husband told me that maybe I should have shortened my nose a little bit, I said, 'I don't think so. I think that I'd like to stick to my nose because I like the way I look ... Otherwise, I change everything, or maybe I will never be in the movies, because I like the way I look. I have no complex about my nose.'" Loren confidently added that she stuck to her nose, with no intent on changing it. Knowing how actor Jennifer Grey's regretted how her nose job changed her entire face, it's safe to say that the Italian star made the right decision.
In 2014, Loren shared the same sentiment with The Hollywood Reporter. "I always tried not to listen to these people. They were saying that my nose was too long and my mouth was too big," she said, adding, "At that time, they used to do noses like a French nose with a little tip at the end — they liked that. Can you imagine me with a nose like that?"
Sophia Loren has become a role model for aging gracefully
While there are numerous Old Hollywood glamour secrets we can still use today to feel beautiful, one of the most important things that Sophia Loren has taught us throughout her career is self-acceptance. Whether she talked about her nose or her age, Loren has always been known as someone who exudes confidence. In fact, in 1985, she famously shared her thoughts on turning 50 with TV host Merv Griffin, saying, "I have never been afraid of age. I always tell my age." (via Raeleen Mautner).
After turning 90 in 2025, Loren was asked what her secret to looking younger was. "There is no secret," she told Hello! about it. "This is the face I was born with. I like to keep myself as I was born, no secrets otherwise." Loren is living proof that, with the right mindset (and some beauty tricks here and there), one can look stunning in any decade.
In 2020, Loren talked openly about beauty and what she perceives it to be. "I have always believed that beauty first and foremost comes from internal attributes more than external ones. The inner depth and richness of a person contributes immensely to their physical appearance; I think most important is what one harbors inside rather than outside," she said (via Haute Living SF). "There is a fountain of youth: It is your mind, your talents, the creativity you bring to your life and the lives of the people you love. When you learn to tap this source, you will have truly defeated age," Loren added. With that mindset, it's certainly not surprising that the "Marriage Italian Style" actor is looking fabulous as she's strutting through her early 90s!
