'60s Model Peggy Moffitt Rocked Her Bold Signature Style Into Her 80s

Want an example of a bold signature look that lasted a lifetime? Look no further than Peggy Moffitt. The American model stepped onto the scene in the mid-'60s with her boundary-pushing Vidal Sassoon geometric haircut and bold Kabuki-esque makeup. Between her beauty look and the mod fashions she donned, she's remained one of those heightened iconic symbols from the decade. While other models of the era, such as Twiggy and Jean Shrimpton, modernized their classic '60s hairdos over the years, Moffitt stayed true to her defining look.

In October 2012, at age 75, Moffitt attended a party in Hollywood showing that her bold, iconic flair hadn't gone anywhere. She still flaunted her five-point haircut, one of the hair trends from the 1960s you may have forgotten about. Moffitt donned this iconic style, no longer courtesy of Sassoon, who passed away earlier that year, and dramatic black eye makeup. Fans praised the model's continued authenticity. "Peggy's message is to be true to yourself no matter what your age. She carries confidence by the pail-full and has, in fact, always looked this way. A problem for most of us is finding who that person is, or at least what she looks like. We may never, but kudos to those who do," wrote one admirer online.

There are certain celeb outfits from the '60s that define the era's style, and model Peggy Moffitt's mod looks are instantly recognizable from the decade of free love. She was closely aligned with designer Rudi Gernreich, whose fashions were heavy on geometric prints, oversized buttons, and futuristic details — like a clear plastic panel down the front of a mod dress. Moffitt reportedly kept more than 300 of the designer's pieces, so it makes sense that she would continue to lean into the aesthetic throughout her life.

In 2004, Moffitt wore a red mod-inspired look to a party in Hollywood. She paired a red sweater with stripes on the arm with red shorts over red opaque tights, which were a signature piece in the '60s. In 2011, the model wore a black-and-white geometric print dress to a screening of "Vidal Sassoon The Movie." At the event, she posed for photos with the hairstylist who helped define this look, which she apparently loved so much that she ended up keeping for life. The model passed away in 2024, at age 86, but she'll forever be an icon.
