5 Blond Hair Color Trends Perfect For Older Women

As you get older, your approach to beauty should change. It's not just about switching up your skincare routine, but looking into a different color palette too. After all, your entire body changes with age, meaning there are certain lipstick shades you should skip if you have an older face and even eyeshadow colors to which you need to say "au revoir" and never look back. If that weren't enough, your later years are also a time to embrace hair color trends that are going to work with your age, instead of against it. That's where blond hair can become your best friend.

"Color treatments have come a long way in the past few decades and are less damaging to the hair," New York City–based board-certified dermatologist and hair expert Erin Gilbert told Allure, adding that women often begin to color their hair more as grays start to show up. "My number one piece of advice is: treat what you can and then go with the flow. This may be an opportunity to change your hairstyle and color for the better," explained Gilbert.

One of the best colors for older women is blond and its various shades. Blond isn't just an easy way to minimize the appearance of gray hair, but its lightness is complementary because it's less harsh. Granted, not every blond will be right for every older woman, but your hairstylist can help guide you in the right direction.

Manhattan blond works with a variety of skin tones

Coined by celebrity colorist Rita Hazan, Manhattan blond is a shade that's on the warmer side of the blond spectrum, leaning toward buttery blond that includes honey-colored tones. The reason it works for older women is because it's a natural-looking blond that complements a variety of skin tones, as well as helping to lift the dullness that can come with mature skin. Because, let's be honest, even if you avoid ingredients that aren't doing your older skin any favors, it's still not going to be at the same level of dewiness that it was in your younger years.

"You color your base to a buttery blonde, then highlight on top," Hazan told InStyle in June 2026 in regards to achieving the perfect Manhattan blond. "It's sophisticated, polished, yet expensive," she explained. Why not treat yourself to a blond trend that's going to make you look as good as you feel?

Gray blending helps weave your silver strands in with your blond locks

If you're done fearing what you might look like with gray locks, then gray blending, the hair trend that adds depth to your transitioning look, is a fantastic option for mature blond women. "Gray blending is a great technique because it helps eliminate unnecessary damage to the hair when it's already in a delicate state," celebrity colorist Kadi Lee told Harper's Bazaar in July 2026. "The goal is for the lightened pieces to blend thoughtfully with the gray, so you can't tell where the color ends and the natural hair begins."

Sarah Jessica Parker and Sharon Stone are perfect examples of how chic gray blending can be. Both women are mostly still blond, but their hairstylists have taken what gray hair they have and dispersed it throughout their blond hair, so it's only in certain lighting that that the gray is truly visible. It's not only a great way to begin your transition to gray from blond hair, but allows you to experiment with letting your silver strands shine.

Opting for champagne blond will make grays less noticeable

While there are plenty of blond options for older women, one that really stands out is champagne blond. It's a gorgeous shade that requires minimal upkeep because it seamlessly gets along with incoming gray and white hairs. Champagne blond also leans into that oh-so-stunning minimal aesthetic, where less is more. As Rogerio Cavalcante, founder of The Second Floor Salon, explained to InStyle in June 2026, "Creamy beige blondes and champagne tones are also trending because they brighten the face without looking harsh."

Because platinum is one of the hair colors that are making you look older, champagne is the best alternative — as evidenced by our beloved queen Jean Smart who rocks the shade with her signature elegance. Remember: Getting older isn't about giving up colors and shades you love, but just tweaking things to fit the new, mature you. Platinum would simply be too much.

Strawberry blond is a great way to complement mature skin

Not too far down the blond spectrum from champagne is strawberry blond. With its subtle shades of reddish pink, it's a bit bolder than champagne, making it an ideal complement to red lipstick, once you determine which shade of red is best for your skin tone. "Strawberry blonde is the perfect blend of warm tones and soft blondes," colorist Hannah Gayle told Marie Claire UK in February 2025. "This works beautifully with older skin, creating depth with the warmth and softness from the blonde."

Strawberry blond is also versatile in that there are various shades of the color to choose from. Because of that, you can lighten things up for the spring and summer months, then take the shade down a notch or two when autumn and winter roll around. It's also this aspect of strawberry blond that keeps it on the lower maintenance side of blonds for older women. Rather than constantly visit the salon for regular touchups, it's nice to be able to take a break.

Mushroom blond just might be the color you've been looking for your whole life

Although the word "mushroom" is likely to conjure up various shades of brown, mushroom blond, on the other hand, is in a category all its own. It's also a perfect blond option for older women, because its ashy base takes you closer to gray, if that's where you want to go. If that's not the case, it blends nicely with incoming grays, so you're not running to the salon every two to three weeks.

"Mushroom blonde is a soft, earthy blonde shade built on neutral-to-cool tones," hairstylist and salon owner Sean Michael told InStyle in November 2025. "It features a blend of beige, taupe, and smoky blonde that's dimensional, low-contrast, and intentionally muted." Because it's a mix of blond and brunette tones, it also allows for a seamless grow out, should you want to switch things up, eventually going lighter or darker. If you choose to turn things down a notch or two, then you'll be headed toward the trendy mushroom brown hair color that, to no surprise, is also a perfect brown for older women.
