'80s Star Romances That Ruled The Decade

The '80s were one of the biggest decades of all time, literally and figuratively. From ultra-teased hair to an endless rotation of power ballads playing on radio stations, there was no such thing as too much during this time. Although there was no social media back then, celebrity culture was huge, and folks loved reading about juicy gossip in the tabloids. That was our gateway into their glamorous lives and their love lives. People loved reading about which stars had hooked up, broken up, and made up.

Some romances of the decade stood the test of time and remain Hollywood's success story. Others have fizzled out with a dramatic bang, but are still among those relationships that fans look back on fondly. And it's not just fans who reminisce about their fave celebs' brief romantic stint. Some famous faces have even opened up about their past lovers years later, proving that these were meaningful connections. The '80s were totally tubular in all the right ways, and these couples will go down in history as some of the best romances of the period.

Talk about a love that was meant to be. Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell first met in 1966 on the set of "The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band," but the "Tombstone" actor wasn't even legal. Fast forward 17 years, and the two reconnected while filming "Swing Shift" and have been together since. After welcoming their son Wyatt together in 1986, Hawn and Russell proved that their on-screen chemistry was as strong as ever while filming "Overboard" a year later. Hawn later shared on "The Late Late Show with James Corden" in 2017 that rewatching the hit comedy with her longtime partner brought all the feels. "You know how sometimes you forget why you fell in love? I remembered everything, and why I fell in love. It was really something to be able to watch that," she gushed.

While Hawn may have been initially enamored by Russell's good looks, it was his love for her kids that made her fall in love with him. While on "Conan O'Brien Needs A Friend," in 2024, she revealed, "What really caught me was that he came over to my place at the beach. I had my two little children there — I had Oliver and Katie. Katie was about four ... and Oliver was six. He went over to the bedroom where they were sleeping, and he looked for a long time at Katie sleeping, and then he looked at Oliver." That's when she knew he was a keeper, and to this day, adorable pics of Hawn and Russell prove they're relationship goals.

The '80s may have been all about preppy clothes, lace, and neon spandex, but Lisa Bonet and Lenny Kravitz bucked the norms with their super cool, laid-back hipster vibes. The television star and the rock singer met at a concert in 1985, and it seemed like they were made for each other. Although Bonet was well-known for her role as Denise Huxtable on "The Cosby Show," Kravitz was a rising musician at the time. However, together, they became a most gorgeous couple who matched each other's indie aesthetics with lots of leather and long locks.

Bonet was the inspiration behind Kravitz's first album, "Let Love Rule," with the "Fly Away" singer telling Men's Health in 2020, "It was the first time I'd opened up like that, and had known love like that, and freedom." He added, "And watching her do what she did, how she maneuvered, in her artistic life — it was that last thing I needed, on this road. This sound, this message, this movement that I was looking for — I heard it in my head." Although Kravitz and Bonet split in 1991, the former couple remain friends to this day, and share a celebrity kid who inherited her parents' famous style, Zoë Kravitz. The rocker told People in 2024, "We were quite the family. We had our own groove, expression, fashion. It was a beautiful time. The world Zoë's mom and I were creating, our family, it was about peace, love and spirit."

What happens when two of the hottest '80s actors have a chance meeting at a movie screening? Why, they get married within months, of course. Demi Moore and Bruce Willis locked eyes at the showing of "Stakeout" in July 1987, but it wasn't love at first sight. "We both had deals with TriStar Pictures, so I said, 'I hear you have the good office at TriStar.' He replied with something short, like, 'I'm never there.' My impression was, he's kind of a jerk," Moore wrote in her memoir, "Inside Out" (via The Telegraph). However, the "Die Hard" star wooed her at an after-party, and the pair got hitched in Las Vegas the following November.

Moore and Willis welcomed three daughters together before calling it quits in 1998. The two are still close to this day, with Moore supporting Willis through his frontotemporal dementia diagnosis. "We will always be a family, just in a different form. For me, there was never a question. I show up because that's what you do for the people you love," the "Substance" star told Variety in 2025. Moore added, "I hope it's encouraging for others to see that there's a different way to do things. There is life after divorce. There is a way to co-parent with love."

Like many teenage love stories, Melissa Gilbert and Rob Lowe's relationship was filled with drama. The two started dating at the age of 17 in 1981 while the "Little House on the Prairie" star was already a household name. Meanwhile, Lowe was relatively unknown at the time, but would soon become widely known as a member of the Brat Pack. "I fell instantly, hopelessly and stupidly in love. We went from first date to instant couple. I felt like I was starving for Rob," Gilbert shared in her memoir, "Prairie Tale" (via Today). The honeymoon stage didn't last that long, however, with both cheating and an eventual unplanned pregnancy finally tearing Gilbert and Lowe apart. "We broke up. It ran its course. I think we were just too young," the former child star told Today in 2009.

While on the "I Choose Me" podcast in July 2025, Gilbert spoke about her time with Lowe, telling Jennie Garth (22.52), "It was very tumultuous ... I felt like a bit of an old sage in the business at that point because I'd been doing it for so long," she stated, adding that her ex-boyfriend was relatively new to the business then. Gilbert admitted, "I don't think I was prepared for the stuff that came with it, necessarily. I was prepared for all of the having to go to premieres and things and award shows and all of that, but I wasn't prepared for the fandom and frankly, the girls." 

Christie Brinkley and Billy Joel weren't looking for love when they met, but their chemistry couldn't be denied. The model and singer were vacationing separately on St. Bart's in 1983 when Brinkley caught the "Piano Man" singer's eye, even though he was with Elle Macpherson at the time. Joel got Brinkley's attention by playing the piano at an island bar, where she joined him, and soon became smitten with the Long Island native. "We laughed like you couldn't believe. But also he was so sensitive, and he did all the old-fashioned things, the flowers, the notes and the poems and the songs. He was going into the recording studio, and he was writing all these songs and saying, 'This one's for you.' How could I not fall in love with him?" Brinkley shared with People in 2025.

Brinkley and Joel were the epitome of supermodel meets rock star during the '80s and stayed together for nine years before divorcing in 1994. "I was in a relationship with someone who I cared deeply about. But I was not able to be at home. I was not able to be with my family. It was a very sad time for me," the pianist said in the documentary "Billy Joel: And So It Goes" (via People). Their daughter, Alexa Ray Joel, is all grown-up and gorgeous, and the exes continue to maintain a good friendship. "I would say that I still love him. The love is still there," Brinkley told Today in 2025, long after her split with Joel.
