Rhea Perlman & Danny DeVito's Unconventional Relationship Works For Them And That's All That Matters

Rhea Perlman and Danny DeVito separated nearly 10 years ago, but aren't legally divorced and still talk every day. "We're always over at her house," DeVito told AARP in a recent interview. "We see the grandchildren together, that kind of stuff. So that's a good relationship." The duo, who began dating in 1971 and married in January 1982, share three children, who are a driving force behind their unconventional arrangement. "We are still married," Rhea Perlman confirmed during an appearance on Julia Louis-Dreyfus' "Wiser Than Me" podcast. "And we are still very good friends and we see each other a lot. And our family is still the most important thing to both of us." 

Despite their children — Lucy, 43, Grace, 41, and Jacob, 38 — now being adults, Perlman and DeVito still have a meal or two together each week, though getting to this point in their relationship has not been easy. While Perlman didn't dive too deep into the reason for their split, she alluded to the fact that DeVito was more concerned with his career goals than she was. Similarly, though a bit more tragic, "Partridge Family" star Shirley Jones' success doomed her marriage to Jack Cassidy, though the two also loved each other deeply.

Danny DeVito and Rhea Perlman, celebs who have co-parenting down to a science, met in 1971 and remain somewhat inseparable to this day. Despite their relationship's ups, downs, and eventual split, the "Taxi" costars have no intention to divorce. "We've been together a very long time, so there's a lot of love and history," Perlman told the New York Post about their decades-long relationship. "We agree on enough things, so why [ruin] that with the yucky things that come with a divorce?" DeVito shared a similar update on the status of their relationship, noting how close they are. "We're friends," DeVito told People in 2019. "We're happy. Everybody's happy." 

Though, Perlman admitted to Julia Louis-Dreyfus that she gets lonely and misses living with a romantic partner. While she laughed at the idea of being matched with someone, the 78 year old expressed her interest in finding a young, wealthy man. While it's unclear on whether or not DeVito has been dating, perhaps the two may consider an open relationship like '70s star Shirley MacLaine had with her ex-husband.
