Here's What The Leading Ladies Of Eight Is Enough Looked Like Decades Later

Few family dramas have left a legacy quite like "Eight Is Enough." Premiering in 1977, the ABC series followed the ups and downs of the Bradford family, consisting of the patriarch, a columnist named Tom, his wife Joan, their eight children (Mary, David, Joanie, Nancy, Elizabeth, Susan, Tommy, and Nicholas), and stepmother Abby. Capturing a devoted audience with its portrayal of a relatable American family, the show won two People's Choice Awards and two Young Artist Awards. While Dick Van Patten's role as Tom is certainly one of the most critical contributions, it was the women of the "Eight Is Enough" cast who created some of the most memorable moments in the show. 

Whether displaying maternal instincts, girlhood frustrations, or love life woes, these actors became unforgettable faces for an entire generation, helping define an era of television. Like the leading ladies of "Family Ties" these days, time has naturally brought changes to their appearances, but it has also highlighted the decisions, grace, and challenges that have molded them throughout the years. While some continued acting after the show's 1981 end, others' lives have taken unexpected turns. From glamorous red carpet appearances to candid glimpses into everyday life, here's a look at what the leading ladies of "Eight Is Enough" look like decades after the show wrapped.

Connie Needham starred as Elizabeth Bradford on "Eight Is Enough." Appearing in 112 episodes of the series, the child star grew up before America's eyes. Needham, who turned 66 in 2025, later starred in two post-series TV movies, "Eight Is Enough: A Family Reunion" in 1987 and "An Eight Is Enough Wedding" in 1989, following the show's end. In January 2019, the actor posed next to a few of her co-stars at a theater premiere. 

While Needham is obviously all grown up now, her hair was noticeably shorter than it was during her years on "Eight Is Enough." Needham retained her youthful glow, however, even after an ovarian cancer diagnosis. "I was having a lot of bloating, and I started having a little difficulty breathing to the point that I thought I had a lung infection," she told Radar Online in February 2010 about her symptoms before her diagnosis. Despite the health battle, Needham's smile has remained as bright as the Elizabeth Bradford we all know and love.

Known for her role as Susan Bradford Stockwell on "Eight Is Enough," Susan Richardson is still pretty recognizable despite her struggle with achalasia, a rare swallowing condition that leads to a paralyzed esophagus. The disorder, which also claimed the lives of her mother, father, and sister, has led her to suffer several strokes and require a feeding tube. "Eight years ago, they told me I wouldn't be here — I'm here," the "Soldiers of Innocence" actor said boisterously during a 2017 interview with "Inside Edition."

Still, the uncanny resemblance in style to the character she portrayed in "Eight Is Enough" remains. As she did while on the show, Richardson, who turned 74 in 2026, wore her hair styled with bangs and her cheeks doused in blush. During the conversation, the "American Graffiti" star was living in a trailer in Pennsylvania with neither a TV nor a computer and spent her days illustrating children's books, playing the piano, and reading cards from fans.

Laurie Walters made her debut as Joannie Bradford on "Eight Is Enough," after a notable role in the  1973 film "Warlock Moon" as Jenny Macallister. The actor, who turned 79 in 2026, has remained loyal to her natural hair color over the years, but has changed up its styling and length. Alongside Connie Needham and a few of her other castmates at that same 2019 theater premiere, Walters sported a curled pixie haircut and mauve lipstick, which she wore many times when she played a member of the Bradford family.

Since the show's 1981 end, Walters starred in several TV movies, including the "Eight Is Enough" productions and "The Taking of Flight 847," as well as theater productions like "Richard III."  The star retired from acting in the '90s to pursue her passion for environmentalism, founding the Ojai Church of the Wild, a group that meets throughout the Ojai Valley to commune with nature and is working to establish an environmental lending library.

Dianne Kay, who turned 72 in 2026, also still rocks much of the same glam she wore while starring on "Eight Is Enough" as Nancy Bradford in 111 episodes of the sitcom. On screen, she was often seen sporting picture-perfect soft glam looks, like the above promotional photo, where she wore her hair curled and parted off-center with an orange-y red lipstick. As she posed next to her co-stars at the 2019 theater premiere, it's clear the look had become a part of her style. 

After the show's end, she was cast for roles in "The Love Boat," "Dark Room" and "Reggie." She made an appearance in a 1999 episode of "Diagnosis: Murder" before retiring from acting. At some point, she was diagnosed with kidney cancer, but has been in remission since 2011, and overall, Kay has opted for a rather quiet life following her Hollywood departure.

Betty Buckley, who starred as Abby Abbot, Tom Bradford's new love interest during Season 2 of "Eight Is  Enough," is one of the few leading ladies from the series still acting, starring in films like "Split," "The Happening," and "Eternity." The actor posed for photos during the opening night of Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Cats: The Jellicle Ball" on Broadway at the Broadhurst Theatre in April 2026. The 79-year-old's tilted gaze, high cheekbones, and chic hairstyle served as her most recognizable features. "I think self-acceptance is really a major thing — one of the beauties of growing older," she told Ageist. Buckley's timeless beauty and talent make her one of the most renowned actors from the "Eight Is Enough" cast to date.
