2026 Vs. 2016: How Fall Trends Have Evolved (& Stayed The Same) Over The Years

In the decade between 2016 and 2026, much has changed — especially in the fashion world. 2016 saw the beginning of the influence of social media on fashion, with aesthetics like grunge and athleisure rising due to platforms like Tumblr and Instagram. While social media also impacted 2026 trends, the top aesthetics of the year are much softer, with '90s minimalism and light patterns like polka dots dominating the trend cycle overall. The difference between the two decades is staggering. For one, fashion in fall 2026 has an overall more feminine energy with body-hugging silhouettes, ruffles, and lace details overtaking the year's trends. In contrast, 2016 had an edgier vibe; while feminine shapes were still in vogue, some of the grunge aesthetic that dominated years prior experienced a unique evolution that saw pinstripes, fur, and dark velvet among the top fall trends. 

However, there are some common threads between the two very different decades. Others put their own spin on the look, opting for dresses in bold, unexpected colors rather than the traditionally drab school uniform plaid. 

There are many iterations of the academia fashion trend that rise to prominence nearly every fall, but 2026 is taking a very unique approach to the campus-ready aesthetic. This year, we're taking the academia trend and giving it a more mature spin. Instead of the girlish plaid jumpers, fall 2026 is seeing the birth of poetcore — a librarian-chic aesthetic that involves bookish sweaters, plaid skirts of varying lengths (from mini to ankle-grazing), boxy blazers, and blouses. While most of 2026 fall trends are more feminine in silhouette than those from 2016, poetcore is one outlier; some are styling it as a twist on menswear, with bulkier coats, button-down tops, and blazers providing an androgynous shape.

Menswear comes back into fashion almost every fall. However, the difference between fashion in 2016 and 2026 is quite apparent in their respective approaches to full suits. Pinstripe suits were all the rage in 2016, with the thin stripes providing a workwear-chic vibe that women couldn't get enough of. They knew how to rock pinstripes outside of the office, using baggy silhouettes to their advantage for contrast and subversion. While suits are still en vogue for fall 2026, this year's take is more sultry than ever before.

Grunge re-emerged in the mid-2010s, with it being a (for the time) modern adaptation of the indie sleaze aesthetic that dominated the earlier part of the decade. As such, two of the leading textures of 2016 were fur and moody-colored velvet. Velvet skirts, trousers, and even blouses swept across the fashion scene as people sought to capture the grungy vibe of the season.
