There was nothing quite like the sitcoms of the '80s. They were family-friendly, showcased lots of big hair, and offered corny jokes we loved to groan at. There was always that one long-suffering relative and a wise-cracker for comedic relief. And of course, we can't forget the TV moms that practically raised us. From Elyse Keaton (portrayed by Meredith Baxter) on "Family Ties" to Harriette Winslow (played by Jo Marie Payton) on "Family Matters," these on-screen matriarchs were full of infinite wisdom with a side of sass.

Now that four decades have passed, some of the actors, like Baxter, have mostly stayed out of the public eye (though she's still living her best life with her wife, Nancy Locke). Others, like Phylicia Rashad from "The Cosby Show," remain in the spotlight on television and in the theater. At the heart of the family was matriarch Elyse Keaton, played by Meredith Baxter. When the show started in 1982, she was around 35 years old, meaning she was a pretty young mother, as Alex Keaton (played by Michael J. Fox) was already in high school.
