Quote Of The Day By Alicia Keys: 'You Can Wear All The Greatest Clothes In The World, But...'

Alicia Keys has been one of music's biggest superstars for nearly three decades, so we'd totally get it if she'd developed an air of grandiosity and smugness. We do love a diva, after all. But Keys — despite winning 17 Grammy Awards — has accomplished a task that feels about as special as the trophies. She's managed to still feel approachable yet quietly confident, and all while gifting us with hit songs that have defined an era like "If I Ain't Got You" and "Girl on Fire."

Aside from the music, Keys has also been one of our favorite style icons, regularly putting on a masterclass on how to evolve and elevate your style without losing your down-to-earth cool. No doubt she could show us plenty of stylish ways to wear denim beyond jeans, or how to combine leather with feminine silhouettes for a perfectly balanced and trendy outfit. 

But it can't be all about the fantastic clothes. Born in New York City and with roots in R&B and soul music, Keys is also one celeb who radiates aura and seems to possess a connection to herself that transcends the outfits, the glam, and the stage persona. So, who better than Keys to offer today's quote of the day? We just know she's going to get right to the heart of the matter.

Back in September 2012, Complex published a Q&A between Alicia Keys and a Reebok representative to promote a collab between the musician and the shoe brand. When asked about her top three styling tips, Keys said less is more and that she always keeps a good pair of sneakers around. And for her last tip, the artist said, "The most important thing to remember is that you can wear all the greatest clothes in the world, but you've got to have a good spirit on the inside. That's what's really going to make you look like you're ready to rock the world." It's so simple that we say it to kids, and yet it can be deceptively hard to truly take in and even harder to put into practice. But Keys is so right: True beauty comes from within.

Alicia Keys has been setting style trends since she first broke through. Hello, who could forget the beaded braids and super-slick leather trenchcoat from the "Fallin'" music video back in 2001? At the same time, Keys has also been vocal about how crucial it is to stay firmly grounded and be intentional about discovering a strong sense of self, especially in the public eye. Keys joined the "Today" show's "Making Space: Wellness Day" in October 2025 where she discussed the importance of women taking time for themselves. Keys shared that she went on a days-long meditation retreat following the birth of her second son and that she still meditates each morning, to "take care of [her] soul." 

Keys fueled headlines when she announced back in 2016 that she would stop wearing makeup because she'd become addicted to the done-up version of herself. Of course, this was a hot topic of conversation for some time — because how dare a woman be out and about showcasing her bare face? To be sure, there's no shortage of times Alicia Keys went makeup-free and looked flawless. Then, ironically, she'd get poked at whenever anyone detected a hint of lip color. The hoopla only further underlined Keys' point. It's totally fine to love fashion and beauty, but it is sometimes necessary to decenter our preoccupation with prettying ourselves for the opinionated observer and instead focus on our inside light.
