Dolly Parton's Hidden Tattoos Are The Stuff Of Legend - What She Said About Her Mysterious Ink

Between the big blond hair, dramatic eyelashes, and Dolly Parton's stunning acrylic manicures, the late country star easily had one of the most iconic looks of all time. While Dolly Parton will be remembered as a fashion icon, many fans may not know that she had several little tattoos hidden under all those fabulous outfits. Her tattoos were so mysterious that they've became the stuff of legend. Parton apparently even had to confirm that they were real and debunk rumors that she was hiding massive ones under her usual long-sleeve clothes. "I do have some tattoos, that's true. But they're tasteful. I'm not a tattoo girl," she told People in 2020. 

Whether or not Parton identified as a "tattoo girl," she did start getting ink as far back as 1996, since that's when she revealed on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" that she had body art of both an angel and a butterfly. She also inked more of her favorite designs like pink flowers, bows, and ribbons, according to People. In true Parton fashion, her tattoos were bright and colorful, too. "I don't have the real heavy, dark tattoos. Mine are all pastel," she told W in 2021. While Parton's tattoos sounded very much her style, she had previously revealed that she placed them where people other than her husband wouldn't see. For Parton, her tattoos were more about art than being edgy or making any kind of statement. Yet, they still were meaningful because they put a positive spin on hardships Parton had been through.

Dolly Parton was known for her cheerful optimism, which is why it shouldn't come as a surprise that she used tattoos to turn her scars into things that would make her smile. Parton, who was prone to keloid scarring, told W, "I've had surgeries for different things, and if the scars didn't heal properly, I just gotta put tattoos to take the sting out." Her fair skin would also make her scars turn purple. "Sometimes they won't ever lose the purple, so I started having little pastel little things to disguise things," she explained on "Larry King" in 2016. 

Parton didn't just cover scars. In 2024, she told People that she got a design to disguise an indentation from a feeding tube that she had to use when she was sick. "I like to make positives out of negatives," she said. "I had a little beehive tattooed over it — a little yellow-and-brown beehive with a tiny little bee on top of the hive. The mouth of it is that little sinkhole."

While the country legend had a tendency to tattoo her favorite things, she admitted to People that she still didn't have a tattoo of her husband, despite Parton and Carl Dean's deep love for each other. "No, he's tattooed on my heart," Parton sweetly shared, adding, "Who knows, I may get some more later." Dean passed away in 2025, so perhaps Parton did get another hidden tattoo to deal with her loss. Yet fans will never know. Because while Parton gave so much to the world throughout her long career, her tattoos will always be something she kept for herself.
