Nia Long Has A Famous Comedienne Sister You May Not Have Known About
Nia Long has an acting career spanning four decades, with notable credits dating back to the 1991 film "Boyz 'n the Hood" all the way up to the 2026 biopic "Michael." Long is no stranger to the limelight, so it may surprise fans to know she has a famous comedienne sister named Sommore. Long and the stand-up share the same father, a poet who passed in 2020, with Sommore being about six years older. Despite this connection, the Richard Pryor Award recipient for Comic of the Year and Long rarely publicly interact. "We speak from time to time," the comic explained during a 2016 interview with radio host Divine Martino. "I tell people all the time we share the same father, but we're not necessarily sisters."

In fact, the comedienne, born Lori Ann Rambough, made it a point not to acknowledge she and Long's relationship until she established her own career. "I never talked about it in the beginning because I didn't want it to be a crutch, you know? I didn't want people to be like, 'oh, you know that's her sister,'" Sommore notably told Martin. "I didn't want that to be my accolade." Sommore achieved her goal, boasting a career filled with a number of noteworthy milestones.

Like her sister Nia Long, Sommore's notable credits date back to the '90s. From 1994 to 1995, she served as the first woman to host BET's "Comic View" series. Then, in 2000, the New Jersey native and her fellow "Queens of Comedy" tour stars made The Guinness Book of World Records for being the first women to perform for a crowd of more than 50,000 people. Like Long, Sommore has also tried her hand in acting, appearing in films like "Soul Plane" and "Dirty Laundry." Additionally, Sommore and her sister both coincidentally appeared in Ice Cube's "Friday" movie franchise, with Long starring in the 1995 debut film and the comedienne in the third film, "Friday After Next." Today, Sommore continues to make waves in the entertainment industry, landing her own 2026 Netflix special, "Sommore: Chandelier Fly." During the stand-up performance, she joked about friends like Oprah Winfrey, who's had a head-turning face transformation, and more.
Sommore wore an unforgettable sparkling black ensemble for the special. "I never forget that the audience will see me before I tell a single joke. I intend to make an impression and show my appreciation by dressing up," said Sommore during an interview with L' Officiel India. Long has also made headlines for her fashion choices. According to Marie Claire, the "Love Jones" actor was very involved in the design of the custom Laquan Smith gown — a black dress she upgraded with some killer accessories — that she wore to the 2026 Met Gala, the biggest fashion event of the year. Despite Long and Sommore's rather distant relationship, it's safe to say that talent and a great sense of style runs in their family.
