Jamie Lee Curtis' Whirlwind Romance With Husband Of 40+ Years Proves When You Know, You Know

Movie fans may best remember actor Jamie Lee Curtis for her status as an original scream queen. There's also her body-switching role in "Freaky Friday" that led to Curtis' decades-long friendship with Lindsay Lohan. The "Everything Everywhere All at Once" star also deserves recognition for her decades-spanning relationship with her husband, actor and director Christopher Guest, not just for their romance's length, but also for the short amount of time it took for them to realize they were meant for each other.

Curtis was easily smitten with Guest when she first saw him. It didn't take many interactions before they pledged their eternal devotion to each other. "I met my husband and married him after seeing his picture in a magazine," Curtis said at an NBCUniversal Backlot Pass panel in August 2026 (via People). "And we never spent more than 72 hours together before we got married." Given the short amount of time they'd spent together, Curtis admitted she and Guest didn't know each other well when they got hitched. "There wasn't a lot of talking, and we married each other," she continued. "We were strangers when we married. And then you wake up one day and go like, 'Wow, he really doesn't talk.' And we're married [for] 42 years. Thank you very much." Their lack of familiarity ultimately didn't impact their relationship, which is arguably even stronger today.

Jamie Lee Curtis and Christopher Guest married in December 1984, thus joining other celebrities who have been married for over 30 years. A major ingredient in their relationship's recipe for success is Curtis' devotion toward keeping their union intact. She's motivated by the notion that her parents and stepfather have been through several marriages throughout their lives. "I come from an immediate family of 12 marriages," Curtis told "60 Minutes" in a May 2025 Facebook clip. "I'm still married to my first husband — um, you know, it was still important to me that I stay married to my husband; that he's my husband."

Curtis, famously known for her low-effort, classic short locks, further attributed their relationship's success to their willingness to outlast rough patches and stick together until they reached the sunny side of their relationship. "You know, that's marriage," Curtis told Entertainment Tonight in a September 2024 interview. "If you stay on the bus, the scenery changes." She posed the unconventional idea that hatred is a key factor in strengthening relationships. A couple's ability to accept each other's differences and ride through tough times and negative interactions is a crucial quality necessary for them to last decades. "You're going to hate each other," she told Entertainment Tonight, too. "We're human beings. Not leaving, not allowing that hatred to then cause you to make some choice that you're gonna regret. I think that's really the secret." Their lasting partnership is a sign that such an unusual approach to married life could, too, work for others.
