An Unexpected '80s Fashion Trend Is Making A Comeback & It's Bolder Than Ever

Shoulder pads have always been a bit of a controversial style, but whether you love them or hate them, they're certainly a fashion trend from the '80s making a major comeback in fall 2026. Extra bold and boxy versions of this larger-than-life styling choice have been spotted on many A/W 26 runways, including Chloé, Louis Vuitton, and Situationist. While they aren't the most practical, they're definitely fun to add to a fall outfits Pinterest inspiration board. Shoulder pads also aren't always for the faint of heart, but you can see that stars have loved them for years.

Princess Diana often stole the show on the red carpet and she was spotted rocking shoulder pads many times in the '80s, too. In fact, they were a quintessential part of her wardrobe. In July 2026, Ciara wore a dramatic blazer with shoulder pads, which feels on par with this season's more overstated trend. While it seems the theme of fall 2026 is "the bolder the better" when it comes to shoulder pads, they also work surprisingly well as a more casual, everyday look.

Don't get us wrong, we love that maximalist shoulder pads are trending, but for those who want to hop on the trend with more subtlety, this is easier than ever. You can opt for a quietly padded blazer or top that simply enhances the shoulder area without making it look too over the top. A sequined blazer with a boxy silhouette and shoulder pads is the perfect going-out staple as it's a bit more dressy. A slouchy blazer with shoulder pads, however, makes a nice daily staple that can be worn to work or dressed up for dinner with a belt.

While shoulder pads were front and center on the A/W 26 runways, we have noticed that the trend has carried into S/S 27 runways as well. Sharon Stone was spotted in this super wearable white oversized blazer at the Vetements show during Paris Fashion Week in July 2026. The shoulder pads here are noticeable and add shape, but aren't so out there that you'd look overdressed in a more casual setting. Shoulder pads aren't the only thing coming back around this year, either.
