Even within this philosophy, there are a few gray hair trends to choose from, and Pow notes that the most important step is finding a colorist who specializes in gray blending.

"As a gray blending specialist the biggest shift I hear from clients is finally seeking a gray blending specialist in their area," he shared exclusively with Glam. "The people who struggle most with graying hair usually aren't struggling with the gray itself — they're struggling with an outdated routine that was designed for the hair they used to have." Once you find your dream blending specialist, it's time to choose the gray color trend that works the best for you, and the following options are great starting points for a brown base.

The traditional approach when working with gray hair might be to cover up those silver strands at all costs, but according to Benji Pow, there's a much better way to respond. Rather than hiding the graying process, embrace it with gray hair blending. 

"Most colorists add highlights to camouflage gray, but for brunettes this technique could be a better move," he told Glam exclusively. "The Silver Standard is my technique that works by weaving in a custom formula that matches a clients natural hair color, blending down silver/gray strands instead of fighting it. This softens the contrast so the gray looks intentional — not patchy — and the color blends seamlessly as your hair grows out." Once upon a time, you had to rush to the salon as soon as your regrowth came in, but this trend factors in gray regrowth as part of the larger puzzle.

For those with brown hair, adding in silver or cool-toned charcoal balayage sections creates a subtle tonal contrast and leaves room for regrowth and denser patches of natural gray. 

To achieve a similar contrast, you might also look into gray ombré or reverse ombré, which sees the hair get lighter — or darker — from root to tip. If your grays come strongly through at the root, it makes sense to lighten the top of your hair with an ashy shade that perfectly balances your natural hue with the incoming silver, and then go darker at the ends.

Surprisingly, you don't have to exclusively stick with a brown color palette if you've got brunette hair that's graying. Blond highlights can work really well when thrown into the mix with your brunette base and graying strands, and there are endless ways to pull it off. If you're a fan of the balayage technique, you could try combining blond balayage highlights with gray ones, or stick exclusively to blond. The key is to keep the base dark, but then have your colorist weave in larger sections of gray and blond for a frosted finish that looks natural as it grows out. 

Natural-looking highlights tend to look the best on graying hair, but you could also forgo balayage for regular old blond highlights. The exact shade should depend on your skin tone and undertone, but adding just a bit of warmth with golden tones can liven up your graying brunette hair. Reaching for warmth is the gray hair trend that can add depth to your transitioning look.

The only thing to be mindful of when going for blond highlights is that bleach is drying, so you'll have to add some extra TLC to your haircare routine. Benji Pow notes that graying hair already requires specialized care, so you'll definitely want to make your new hair regimen a priority. "Gray strands often feel different — they may feel thick or coarse in texture because they have a porous hair cuticle," he explained in our exclusive chat, stressing that it's vital to add moisture. "A weekly deep-conditioning mask and a leave-in conditioner become non-negotiable, not optional."

Adding in highlights to graying brown hair can give your look new life, but you also have the option of going the other way with lowlights. Mind you, you only want to go a few shades darker than your base color to keep a natural look, but weaving in cool-toned, ashy lowlights will create depth. New silver strands that grow in will be more obvious against lowlights vs. highlights, but that contrast can look polished when the lowlights are strategically placed by your colorist. For a multi-dimensional look, and a gray hair trend that women in their 30s can embrace if they're seeing silver early, you can combine lowlights and highlights together. 

Brunette hair combined only with lowlights and natural grays might initially seem duller than highlighted hair, but you can liven it up with products and treatments. Benji Pow recommends talking to your colorist about glosses, which are better for your hair than dye, and toners, telling Glam exclusively, "A simple clear gloss can add shine to gray without the maintenance commitment of full coverage."

You can't go wrong with natural blending techniques when it comes to graying brown hair, but that's not to say that more curated-looking color trends should automatically be dismissed. Money piece highlights, a decadent hair trend which sees the face-framing sections lightened, are obviously the result of intentional coloring, but they can work really well when your grays are growing in around your face.

It's up to you whether you cover those graying sections with an all-over blond dye, or whether you surround them with highlights in more of a blending technique. Another option, as Benji Pow suggested in our exclusive chat, is to turn to temporary gray touch-up sprays or powders for your face-framing area. "If you have a set part, use the tail of the foiling comb to block your scalp from being completely covered; this leaves your scalp naturally exposed for an undetectable finish," he suggests. But while touch-up sprays are a good option if you have a particular event that lasts only for one night, money piece highlights are a much longer-term coloring option that you won't have to worry about until it's time to head back to the salon.
