This Classic Y2K Manicure Made A Massive Comeback In 2026

While the French tip manicure originated in the 1970s, its popularity peaked in the late '90s and early aughts, when stars like Victoria Beckham and Paris Hilton rocked the look on an everyday basis. Since then, French tips have been in and out of style, but with numerous Y2K trends making a major comeback in 2026, a specific type of French tips has resurged — the deep French mani.

Unlike the classic French tips, this style has a slightly edgier and bolder effect. Speaking to Harper's Bazaar in 2026, manicurist Hannah Taylor explained just what the look entails. "The deep French is a bolder take on the classic French manicure, where the white tip is significantly deeper and covers more of the nail rather than sitting as a fine, delicate line at the free edge," the expert shared, adding, "The look is heavily inspired by 1990s and early-2000s nail trends, when a much more pronounced French tip was popular." 

While getting the design done by a professional is always better, you can also recreate a deep French mani at home, as long as you have a steady hand and some patience. Ensuring the white line is rounded toward the edges of your nails is key, since it's the detail that gives your mani that '90s look, and it ensures it still looks fabulous even once your nails grow out a bit. 

Early-aughts beauty and fashion have been trending for years, and there are plenty of Y2K-era pop star looks we'd rock today. The first half of the 2020s brought back trends like low-waist pants, baby tees, and rimless glasses, among others. In 2025, reality star Kylie Jenner was among the first stars of the younger generation to embrace deep French nails. In August 2025, celebrity nail artist Zola Ganzorigt shared snapshots of Jenner's nails on Instagram, alongside an inspo pic on the 1997 cover of Nails magazine, which she used as a reference.

In a conversation with Refinery29 in 2025, nail artist Mariana Augusto called the aesthetic of the trend "clean girl nails but for baddies." The yearning for nostalgic pop culture helped drive the look's comeback, as big stars from the era were known for a bolder French tip. "Icons like Britney Spears, Missy Elliott and Pamela Anderson were all papped rocking this look back in the day, and, although it definitely isn't for everyone, as a nail artist, I am obsessed with it," Augusto added, explaining, "It's got a really '90s, early '00s feel and I always think of it as the ultimate mob wife manicure."
