Three different versions, three separate decades, and three very distinct casts. John Steinbeck's "East of Eden" has been adapted for the screen three major times, with each version bringing its own interpretation to the classic novel. The first arrived in 1955, featuring major Hollywood heartthrob James Dean as Cal Trask and Jo Van Fleet as Cathy. The second followed in 1981, with the riveting Jane Seymour taking on the character of Cathy. And in the most recent adaptation, released in 2026, Florence Pugh steps into the same role.

The 1955 version of "East of Eden" was based largely on the final part of the story, turning Cal into the main character. Decades later, the 1981 version did almost the exact opposite, telling the full story across three parts. Then came Netflix's 2026 adaptation, which spans seven episodes and pulls from different portions of the novel, while making Cathy the central character.

The leading ladies of Netflix's "East of Eden" don't look the same on screen and in real life, and the women who starred in earlier iterations couldn't be more different either. But they all brought something special to the story.

Jo Van Fleet plays older Cathy in 1955's East of Eden

In Jo Van Fleet's "East of Eden" which debuted in 1955, we are introduced to Cathy as an older woman who has already taken over the brothel and is nearing the end of her life. She wears gloves to hide her arthritis and has gray hair. One of the best scenes in the movie comes when she meets Cal. Her voice is ferocious as she explains why she shot her husband and left her family behind. "Because, because he tried to hold me. [...] Nobody holds me," she tells her son (via YouTube). Jo Van Fleet won a well-earned Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her performance.

Jane Seymour depicts every version of Cathy in 1981's East of Eden

Jane Seymour's portrayal of Cathy is incredibly special because of how completely she embodied every side of the character. She did an impressive job as innocent Cathy, slayed as sultry Kate, and was genuinely terrifying as scary Kate. While Jo Van Fleet won an Oscar for the role, Seymour won the Golden Globe for Best Actress for her portrayal of Cathy/Kate in the 1981 "East of Eden." Today, Seymour is as stunning as ever and made our list of Hallmark stars over 50 that are aging like fine wine.

Florence Pugh shows select parts of Cathy's life in 2026's East of Eden

Florence Pugh's Cathy is undoubtedly one of the best parts of Netflix's 2026 "East of Eden." She gave the character new nuance, which isn't an easy thing to do when the novel is as well-known as it is and when two actors have already tackled the role on screen. Despite any preconceived notions about Cathy, her performance was convincing enough to make many rethink the character. In real life, Pugh is absolutely stunning, and she has fantastic taste in books beyond "East of Eden."

Julie Harris' Abra is one of the main characters in the 1955 version of East of Eden

Julie Harris' Abra is arguably the most important female character in the 1955 "East of Eden" after Cathy. She is originally Aron's girlfriend, but gradually falls for Cal after recognizing the similarities between them. More importantly, she plays a huge part in Cal's eventual reconciliation with Adam by encouraging the dying father to finally show his son the affection he has spent his life craving. Julie Harris was memorable in the film and had quite the career afterward, she spent seven years on "Knots Landing" and her last role was in 2009's "The Lightkeepers."

Karen Allen portrays Abra's full story in the 1981 East of Eden

Karen Allen is probably most familiar for her long-running performance as Marion Ravenwood in the "Indiana Jones" franchise, but she brought a very different energy to Abra in the 1981 "East of Eden." However, because Cal and his brother weren't the main focus of this adaptation, Allen's Abra felt less impactful. Regardless, she stepped into the role played it well (it undoubtedly helped that Allen was just as adorable and charming in "East of Eden" as she is in everything else).

Zoe Phillips plays Abra in the 2026 version of East of Eden

In Netflix's "East of Eden," Zoe Phillips, a relative newcomer to the entertainment industry, plays Abra Bacon. Abra in this version follows a storyline that is largely similar to the book. She also develops a relationship with both Cal and Aron Trask, which significantly affects all of their lives. Like the 1981 version, 2026 Abra is also a brunette, but she doesn't have bangs and her wavy hair is typically pulled back.

Anne Baxter was the first ever Faye in the 1981 East of Eden

The 1955 "East of Eden" focuses on Cal and Aron Trask, which meant that Cathy had become Kate and was already the madam of the brothel. As such, there was no Faye in the story because she was long dead. The first major version of "East of Eden" to bring Faye to our screens was the 1981 adaptation, and the role was played by Anne Baxter. The actor did a splendid job of portraying the naive brothel owner and it was especially hard not to feel pity as we watched Kate torture her. Unfortunately, Faye had very little screentime overall.

Martha Plimpton played Faye in Netflix's 2026 East of Eden

If you felt that Faye deserved more screentime, Netflix clearly agrees, because one of its seven episodes is dedicated to Kate's new life as well as her murder of Faye. In the 2026 "East of Eden," Martha Plimpton really delves into the motherly relationship John Steinbeck wrote about. She's warm and trusting, which eventually leads to her downfall. Faye's story was undoubtedly tragic, but Martha Plimpton's kind portrayal made it even more so.
