Animal print makes an appearance in some form every year, but fall 2026 is seeing a subversion of the traditional trend. Rather than relying on those iconic and easily identifiable animal skins, we're zooming out with the motifs of our furry friends, creating a quirkier aesthetic than straight animal print tends to manifest. In addition to Western-inspired cow print which has been huge in fall 2026, horse and sheep designs have been particularly prominent across a range of high-end brands, showing up on runways parading the likes of Louis Vuitton, JW Anderson, and Maison Margiela.

While sheep and lambs are appearing on everything from miniskirts to knitwear this fall, horses have been part of an even bigger explosion onto the scene, and it's no wonder: 2026 is the Chinese Year of the Horse. Brands like Moschino, Chloé, Burberry, Tory Burch, and Loro Piana have released collections featuring garments and accessories inspired by the lunisolar calendar. "I think it makes sense that an animal that symbolizes strength, freedom and speed, [it] overlaps easily with ideas of wealth, prestige and old money," fashion curator Zhao Yun told Vogue.

Meanwhile, Jacques Roizen of DLG China added that horse designs in particular are a natural step for some of the fashion houses riding the wave, saying, "Brands like Hermès and Ralph Lauren possess deep, authentic and iconic ties to the equestrian world, allowing them to activate this critical cultural moment in a way that is not only authentic, but highly differentiated." Whether you have an affinity for horses or sheep, or perhaps both, there's ample opportunity to live out your farmyard fashion dreams in fall 2026. Animal motifs are definitely one of the fall 2026 fashion trends to have on your radar.

There are many ways to incorporate animal motifs into your wardrobe

Motifs can feel bolder than your typical animal print, but that doesn't mean this trend is only for maximalists. You can layer pieces with sheep or horse motifs to create a statement, or you can tone it down depending on your personal taste. Fans of a muted aesthetic might go for a T-shirt with a horse design worn with a simple pair of jeans, or pair sheep knitwear with neutral slacks.

You can take the trend in a high-fashion direction by marrying animal motifs with unexpected garments. Try said horse T-shirt with a corporate-style pencil skirt, which brings together the casual and the formal. If you want to leave an impression, level up a lamb motif skirt with an even louder and more colorful blouse. Especially when it comes to animal knitwear, these pieces can feel a little like grandmacore, or like they embody a vintage eclectic style. However, you could lean into the underlying Western energy by styling your animal motif pieces in a more ranch-approved way, say with a belt donning horse-shaped hardware over leather pants.

Sticking to animal-coded accessories can also help you embrace the modern comeback of the classic old-money aesthetic. A sheer scarf with a horse design pairs surprisingly well with a Burberry trench and otherwise Sloane Ranger-inspired outfit. Speaking of Sloane Rangers, there's an unparalleled way to reflect that British aristocratic feel with this trend: Go for knitwear in the style of the original Warm & Wonderful sheep sweater that Princess Diana made famous in the 1980s. Even if it's not exactly the same, a similar sweater with sheep motifs will evoke the same country-chic energy when worn with other Sloaney staples, like calf-length skirts, front-crease jeans, tweed blazers, and the preppy combo of loafers and socks.
