Downton Abbey Star Elizabeth McGovern's Major Style Transformation In Her 60s
Much like fellow "Downton Abbey" star Joanne Froggatt (who's had a major style transformation in her 40s), Elizabeth McGovern is a fashion muse we can't stop watching. Having turned 65 in 2026, McGovern has really transformed, and it's easy to see that she's empowered by this decade in her life.
As an actor, she isn't overly youth-obsessed and wants to set a good example. "I think it's so important for my daughters to see older faces being represented, who are also still alive, sexy, attractive, intelligent, vital," she told Tatler in a 2025 interview. "So many times when older women are in movies they only fall into three categories ... Where are all the characters who've worked really hard and achieved a lot and are also really smart and complicated?"
This attitude has definitely extended to her fashion choices. McGovern has always had a sense of elegance about her in this department, but we've seen her branch out even more in her 60s and try different things. All in all, her style evolution has been a sight to see.
Elizabeth McGovern channels Old Hollywood energy with ease
Elizabeth McGovern wore a stunning black off-the-shoulder gown to the world premiere of "Downton Abbey: A New Era" in 2022. While McGovern has always been stylish, this Old Hollywood-style look is so glamorous on her and she looks so comfortable in it. The dress in question was designed by couture house Azzi & Osta. She accessorized it simply but beautifully with a gold clutch and single bracelet. In her 60s, McGovern is now also one of those celebrities who proudly show off their gray hair on the red carpet, and we love it!
Elizabeth McGovern looks serene in white
A flattering white dress is one of the things every woman in her 60s should have in her closet. Elizabeth McGovern looks serene in this cape-style dress she wore to the "Downton Abbey: A New Era" New York premiere in 2022. This look is so classy and drapes perfectly over her shoulders. The subtle slit at the bottom is also a really pretty touch. McGovern wore a lot of black in her previous years, but we think white is her color and we're glad she decided to wear it more in her 60s.
Elizabeth McGovern is confident in a power suit
Your 60s are the perfect time to rock a power suit, and Elizabeth McGovern is proof. The actor wore this "Downton Abbey-"coded look to Wimbledon in 2023, and we can't get enough of it. While the vest and blazer are definitely more of a 1920s menswear vibe, McGovern looks so confident in this. Before she turned 60, we saw McGovern wear plenty of pants looks, but not many like this power suit, and we love seeing her branch out.
Elizabeth McGovern favors beautifully tailored pieces
In the past, Elizabeth McGovern wore a slew of midi dresses which looked great on her. But, in her 60s, we've seen her wear things like these tailored pants paired with a nice top at The Savoy Theatre in 2024. She always manages to choose a good color scheme and the silver top and black pants here work great together. Oversized trousers are sometimes hard to pull off because they risk looking too baggy, but these are nicely tailored to her height.
Elizabeth McGovern tears up the runway in a leather trench coat
There are often stereotypes about what women in their 60s can and can't wear, but Elizabeth McGovern couldn't care less about them. The actor tore up the Burberry A/W 2025 runway (alongside her "Downton Abbey" co-star Laura Carmichael) in this gorgeous leather trench coat. This look is perfection, and it's empowering to see women in their 60s walking during fashion week. Although this was a special runway look, we love seeing this edgier side to her and have no doubt she could rock this in real life.
Elizabeth McGovern isn't afraid to go bold
Bold colors look even better in your 60s — Elizabeth McGovern made sure to show us that. The actor wore this brightly-hued look to the "Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale" New York premiere in 2025, and everything about it works. Pink, orange, and black aren't colors you'd immediately think would go together, but the combination here looks so stunning on McGovern. This custom Maison Murad Atelier gown is a departure from the more minimalist color palette we've seen her wear in the past, showing she isn't afraid to stand out in her 60s.
Elizabeth McGovern tries out unique outfit combos that work beautifully for her
Elizabeth McGovern was spotted at a BAFTA gala in 2026 wearing a unique ankle boots, blazer, and dress combo that actually really worked. The cut of the blazer looked sharp and interesting paired with the pastel yellow dress. McGovern has definitely worn longer dresses in the past, but combining it with this particular blazer is a little different for her and a big outfit win in her 60s.
