Kate Middleton's accessory closet is extensive, and made up of a particularly impressive collection of headpieces. She can pull off a wide-brim hat like nobody's business, makes fascinators work with any outfit, and of course, she looks perfectly at home under a tiara. But in October 2026, the Princess of Wales stepped out in a decidedly less formal hair accessory: a humble baseball cap.

In honor of Mountain Rescue Awareness Day, the royal shared a snap on Instagram that showed her and her family after completing the National Three Peaks Challenge. Everyone in the pic was dressed appropriately casually for hiking — it was one of the times that Kate Middleton ditched her heels for flat shoes. A simple baseball cap was the perfect complement to her understated outdoorsy look. The particular hat was the Fjällräven Est. 1960 Cap, which has since sold out online in the color worn by the princess. While the cooler months traditionally call for more substantial headpieces, like beanies, Kate looked so good in her cap that we're inspired to follow suit. After all, there are so many stylish ways to take a baseball cap up a notch.

"Princess Kate Looks AWESOME in a Baseball Cap!" was the caption of a March 2026 Instagram video that showed the mother of three walking in London, England while donning the look. This was a different cap on a different day, suggesting not only that Kate prefers the laid-back accessory perhaps even more than her formal pieces, but that baseball caps are actually a lasting part of her casual rotations. Headbands are the signature style accessory that Kate Middleton ditched to elevate her wardrobe, but it looks like the baseball caps are here to stay.

Kate Middleton's baseball cap masterclass

We might not associate Kate Middleton with any kind of sportswear — baseball caps included — but she does wear this classic accessory more than most people notice. Granted, she usually reaches for baseball caps when practicality calls for it, or to complement a similarly sporty outfit. In July 2022, the princess participated in a Great Britain SailGP Team sailing race, dressing in all the right nautical gear and finishing the look with the team's official cap. The following April, she took part in a training exercise with the Central Beacons Mountain Rescue Team in Wales, topping her athleticwear with a casual camo cap.

In both cases, the caps probably protected her hair from the wind first and foremost, but the royal still styled them to perfection. And we can learn a few things, starting with the importance of the ponytail. Regardless of what you're wearing, a baseball cap looks the most chic when teamed with a polished pony that's been waved or curled. If the occasion calls for it, you can still bring a touch of glam to a pared-down sporty look with dainty hoops, and keep color coordination in mind. The camo cap paired nicely with her similarly earth-toned turtleneck.

All that said, you can definitely wear a baseball cap beyond athleticwear. In the March 2026 video that showed Kate in a navy cap in London, she was wearing a preppy houndstooth blazer, a blue button up, and black slacks. Again, she followed her own style rules by letting the ponytail be the main event and accessorizing with minimalist earrings. When every piece is intentional, a baseball cap can fit into even the most unexpected of outfits.
