The 'Miami Curse' Could Break Up Your Girl Gang, According To TikTok

Whether you're there for a bachelorette party or a girls trip with your best friends, Miami is hands-down one of the most exciting places to visit. In fact, it was one of the top 20 vacation spots in the U.S. in 2021, Newsweek states. However, there's been speculation running around TikTok lately, saying a trip to Miami causes friendship breakups between girls and their besties. This unfortunate phenomenon has even been given a name: the Miami Curse. The name comes from the idea that female friendships don't last after taking a trip to the party capital of Florida.

So, what is it about the trip that is so detrimental to a friendship? There are numerous factors that contribute to the breakup, and they mostly have to do with the toxic mix of alcohol and heat, varying budgets, and different visions of what the vacation will be. But luckily, these can be avoided with proper communication between everyone in the group. It's important to keep these things in mind before you even go to Miami. If you ignore these factors, you may end up coming back from your girls trip without your girls.

Alcohol and excessive sun don't mix

When you're in a place like Miami, it makes sense that you want to sit outside by the pool with a drink in your hand, but being out in the sun for long periods of time exacerbates your drunkeness, according to ChambersLawFirm. In other words, you get a lot drunker than you would drinking inside or in cloudier weather. When the drinks are flying, it's easy to lose count of how many mimosas or margaritas you have under your belt, and we all know how things can get out of control when alcohol is involved.

Things may be said that otherwise wouldn't be if alcohol (made worse by the sun) weren't present. Maybe you have unspoken beef with one of your girls and it all comes out after a couple drinks. Sometimes, liquid courage is all you need to bring up any issues you've been having. In other cases, being dehydrated from drinking all day can also cause arguments between friends. Being hot and dehydrated is enough to make anyone cranky, so it's important to take breaks from the sun and have a glass of water (or three).

Everyone is on a different budget

When you decide to go on a vacation, it's common practice to start budgeting so you have enough money for the trip. Unfortunately, even when budgets are set in advance of girls' trips to Miami, it's common to realize that costs soon exceed that budget, and you actually can't afford the trip. On average, a one-week getaway to Miami can run you about $206 per day, which includes hotels, local transportation, and daily meals (via Budget Your Trip).

This might not seem like a cause for a friendship breakup, but it's actually a huge issue when everyone on the trip has a different budget. What's okay for one person is unaffordable for another. What looks like saving money to someone may look like ruining the quality of the trip to someone else. In Miami, especially, where real costs often creep higher than the budget, tensions can also run high. This is made even worse when the budget is knowingly fabricated.

It's super uncool to lie to each other, no matter the situation. Maybe one of your besties doesn't want to come, but you really want her there (and another person to help pay for the hotel). Regardless of the situation, make sure everyone has an accurate guesstimation of the total cost of the trip.

You guys are envisioning a different trip

One of the biggest issues you and your girls may run into during your trip is having different ideas about what you're looking to do while you're in Miami. When you aren't on the same page about what you want to get out of the trip, it's likely to cause tension within the group. TikTok user @jareenimam recommends you and your girls have a vibe check before you head to Miami. This way, all of you know what everyone is envisioning for the trip.

If two of you are into a chill vacation on the beach and the other three in the group want to party and go out to the clubs, then that should be discussed. Now, you have a clear idea of what everyone wants, so you won't be fighting because you're being pressured into going out when all you wanted was to walk around and sightsee. Partying at the club until 5 a.m. isn't for everyone, and it's important you talk about it before boarding your flight.
