The Only Shoes You'll Want To Wear With Your Long Jean Shorts This Summer

As we all know by now, jorts have had a resurgence in the fashion scene, and if you're anything like us, you're probably wondering the optimal way to style them as we're quickly approaching summer. It's generally agreed that for the baggy, oversized garment, a fitted top is ideal for the upper half, but when it comes to what shoes to pair with them, the answer isn't as clear. That's why we asked Patrick Kenger, lead personal stylist and founder at Pivot Image Consulting, for his exclusive opinion.

He provided two bases from which to build a look: upscale and casual. For a more refined, sophisticated look, Kenger suggested a neutral pair of leather fisherman's sandals and a simpler silhouette. We can't blame him for this suggestion; they are the versatile summer shoe you need in your closet. Conversely, some neutral loafers or mules would also do the trick (if you're not walking long distances, that is).

To achieve a more laid-back, relaxed vibe, Kenger encouraged another recycled footwear trend: platform flip flops for that necessary "walking on a cloud" feeling. "Platform flip flops are having a moment in the (literal and figurative) sun," he told us. "Keeping with the minimalist vibe of the fisherman sandals, these are good if you want to add a bit of height and can help cushion your feet as a bonus." Alternatively, he also gave stylish tennis shoes as an option: "Chunky retro sneakers (especially with modern color blocking) are fun, sporty, and great if you're building a street style look."

There's a trick to picking footwear for jorts

You may have noticed that many of the shoe options for jorts provided by Patrick Kenger involve a vintage, recycled shoe trend of some sort. The reason for this is that we originally saw jorts emerge in the 1960s and '70s, with each decade following having a specific style of the garment in the mainstream. So, it makes sense that the best shoes for styling jorts are ones that we've seen in decades past. However, there are a few more exclusive tips and tricks Kenger provided us with that can be helpful when it comes to styling the denim staple.

"Be aware that long jean shorts can make your leg appear shorter," he noted exclusively to Glam. "To do some visual trickery of your own, go for shoes that show your ankles and/or have some element of elevation like a platform sole to elongate your leg." With that in mind, it would probably be wise to avoid boots or high-tops with jorts, and if you're wearing socks, Kenger advised using either some no-show or ankle socks. Basically, anything that would make your legs appear shorter is off the cards.
