Dua Lipa's Seemingly Inappropriate Wedding Guest Dress Had An Unexpected Twist

Pop star Dua Lipa looks stunning in every outfit she wears, but just because an outfit makes someone look great doesn't mean they should wear it if the setting isn't right. In August 2022, Dua Lipa attended the wedding of designer Simon Porte Jacquemus as he wed his partner, Marco Maestri. She wore a sheer floor-length pale gown that included sparse floral embroidery detail and was designed by Jacquemus himself.

The singer seemed to break the cardinal rule for weddings: Never wear white. This rule is typically followed because white is reserved for brides who should be the center of attention on their big day. While the ceremony included two grooms, Maestri walked down the aisle in a white suit (contrasting Jacquemus' classic black suit.) Some might say Lipa should've selected a different color so as not to distract from the celebrated couple, who decided to include white in their wedding-day wardrobe. That's especially true when the "One Kiss" singer shows up to your wedding, as all eyes will be on her. However, snaps from the festivities show that many guests were wearing white, too, indicating the singer may have simply been following the dress code!

Some might argue that the garment also drew focus away from the couple thanks to its revealing nature. Lipa's see-through dress exposed her white undergarments and included a high slit. The outfit included a halter top and cap sleeves but resembled a beach cover up more than a traditional gown. Still, it was designed by Jacquemus, in this case, a seemingly inappropriate outfit might have been just what the "Don't Start Now" singer was meant to wear all along.

Most wedding guests shouldn't follow Dua Lipa's example

A wedding day should be filled with joy so positive memories can last a lifetime. Much of the day will be captured on camera, so you'll want to look suitable in the pictures. That's why it's always a good idea to make sure you are wearing the appropriate attire. Part of deciding what clothing should be worn is eliminating what not to wear to a wedding. In Dua Lipa's case, she appears to have had permission from the groom for such an outfit — since he designed it. But in most cases, you should avoid dressing as boldly as Lipa did, as this will pull focus from the couple on their special day. Be mindful of your color choices so they do not clash or look too similar to the newlyweds. Again, it was okay for Lipa to wear white given that it appeared to be in the dress code for this particular wedding, but unless you have specific instructions, avoid colors that will clash with the happy couple. Additionally, don't go overboard on accessories as they could be noisy and distasteful.

Always be sure to follow the dress code that the couple has established. You can likely figure this out based on the type of venue where the wedding is being held. For example, the rules of what not to wear to a church wedding are typically more rigid, and you'll want to avoid showing too much skin. A backyard wedding, however, is typically casual in nature so the dress code may be more relaxed. It is also important to remember that you'll need to dress for practicality. If the wedding is taking place in a garden or on a farm, leave the high heels at home in favor of shoes that are easy to walk in. Comfort is the key to getting through a long ceremony and reception with ease.

Dua Lipa's history of questionable outfits

Surprisingly, Simon Porte Jacquemus' wedding isn't the first time the "Houdini" singer suffered a fashion blunder in a white gown. Dua Lipa's 2023 Met Gala look gave bridal Barbie in the worst way. The pattern of the dress looked heavy and did nothing for the singer's shape. With a scoop neck and ballgown skirt, Lipa should've considered the type of opulent gowns that are expected at the Met Gala red carpet. This one just didn't answer the call and appeared flat among the bright flashes of cameras.

The star has a long history of wearing questionable outfits, and not just ones that are unsuitable for the location. Her outfits definitely take a "less is more" approach as she is often seen in clothes that are incredibly revealing and barely cover her body. It's not uncommon to see her in plunging necklines and cheeky cutouts around her waist. The pop singer frequently posts photos on Instagram of herself in nothing more than a teeny bikini.

Perhaps her most inappropriate outfit was at the red-carpet premiere for the movie "Barbie" in 2023. Dua wore a sheer sparkly dress that appeared to be a transparent mesh material. She wore only a thin panty under the dress with nothing covering her chest. An outfit with glamor and elegance would've been a better fit for the Hollywood premiere — and even a touch of pink would've made more sense.
