The Worst-Dressed Stars At The 2025 Governors Awards

While they're not as prestigious as the Academy Awards, the annual Governors Awards (previously known as the Honorary Oscars) pull in an impressive celebrity attendance each year. And this year, the carpet was incredibly star-studded, with numerous actors pulling out some of their best looks of the year. However, while Dakota Johnson, Jennifer Lawrence, and Anya Taylor-Joy impressed, there were a few celebs who walked the red carpet in questionable fashion choices.

From poor tailoring to not testing how a garment photographs, the choices that we witnessed at the 2025 Governors Awards surprised us. One would expect the stars attending the event to have a team of stylists who ensure everything is picture-perfect, but the reality is that quite a few of them — including Amanda Seyfried, Cynthia Erivo, and Kate Hudson, will have to live with their name on a worst-dressed list. But hey, at least they can learn from their mistakes and make up for it at next year's event!

Frankly, it pains us to have to include Elphaba on this list. From Cynthia Erivo's stunning hair transformation to her authentic fashion choices, the actor has regularly been at the forefront of what expressing yourself through your look is all about. However, even the best of the best can make a mistake, and for the "Wicked" star, that mistake happened at the 2025 Governors Awards. Erivo showed up to the red carpet in a dramatic Givenchy coatdress, and while it should have worked in theory, in reality, the bulky silhouette was a tad too much.

Amanda Seyfried is no stranger to making fashion and beauty mistakes, and in our eyes, that only makes her more relatable. In 2024, the "Mamma Mia!" star suffered one of the biggest celebrity makeup mistakes. This year, her makeup has been fine, but her fashion is a whole different story. When Seyfried showed up at the red carpet of the 2025 Governors Awards, we couldn't help but wonder why no one on her team suggested she change. The Valentino dress had so much going on that the only reasonable response to seeing it would have been to say "Next!"

When tailored properly, silk dresses tend to always steal the spotlight on a red carpet. As one of the celebrity kids who inherited their parents' famous style, we definitely expect Kate Hudson to know that tailoring can make or break a look. When the "Running Point" actor showed up to the 2025 Governors Awards in a pale-green silk Valentino gown, we couldn't help but cringe at how poorly the dress fit her. Granted, the design itself seems a tad odd, so it's hard to know if minor adjustments would have even saved this look.

Queen Latifah showed up to the 2025 Governors Awards in a red Lanvin gown that wasn't as dreadful as some other celebrity choices, but it also wasn't doing her any favors. The length of the dress, combined with the lack of structure, resulted in a very casual silhouette for the star of "The Equalizer" — one that couldn't be saved with glamorous accessories and makeup. To make matters worse, the bright color of the material made Latifah's dress instantly noticeable, which made this a fashion faux pas that was hard to miss.

When it comes to red-carpet events, testing out how a garment photographs is crucial. A gown might look stunning in real life, but if it looks bad on camera, that is what everyone will remember. Unfortunately, Regina Hall will have to learn that the hard way. The "Scary Movie" star showed up at the 2025 Governors Awards in a Monique Lhuillier piece that wasn't too memorable and also photographed poorly, as the nude portion of the top drew the wrong kind of attention to her chest.

We love seeing celebrities push boundaries and experiment with fashion. Unfortunately, that doesn't always result in a fabulous look, as Hailee Steinfeld now knows. The actor walked the red carpet of the 2025 Governors Awards in a dramatic black gown by Stephane Rolland. At first, the look seemed avant-garde and bold (even though it's questionable whether Steinfeld pulled it off), but as the "True Grit" actor tried to find her pose, the dress quickly looked ridiculous and over-the-top.

As far as dramatic and unusual silhouettes go, Hailee Steinfeld's look has big competition in the form of Chase Infiniti's white dress. The white tulle skirt of the Louis Vuitton piece was layered in a manner that truly makes us wonder whether designers are so scary that no one working for them dares to call out a bad idea. Granted, a look like this may have had potential in an editorial spread, but it isn't really red-carpet material. As a rising actor, the "One Battle After Another" star will undeniably learn from her fashion mistakes.

In a sea of long red-carpet gowns, Natalie Portman's look for the 2025 Governors Awards definitely stood out. The actor walked into the event in a textured blue Dior minidress that was cute but not fancy or glamorous enough for the event. Due to its short length, it instantly looked less sophisticated, but with the right accessories, it could have worked. Instead, the matching blue heels make it seem too costume-like — and we certainly expect way more from the "Black Swan" star.

You would think that by now, celebrities would know better than to rock red-carpet gowns that resemble grandma's couch and curtains. After Kim Kardashian's unforgettable 2013 Met Gala look, we thought we'd never see a star rock a similar floral pattern again, but here we are. Imogen Poots showed up to the 2025 Governors Awards in a strapless Rodarte gown that simply wasn't going to work on anyone. In fact, to make matters worse, the entire pattern was in sequins, making the "All of You" actor's look stand out even more. 

Jayme Lawson attended the 2025 Governors Awards in a coral dress by Marmar Halim. While there's nothing wrong with the design, the dress the "Sinners" star wore definitely lacked glamour. Instead, due to its tube-like top and fringe skirt, it looked like something one would wear to the beach. Now, while there are award shows where a look like this might be appropriate, the Governors Awards definitely call for a slightly more sophisticated and exquisite choice.
