Dylan Dreyer could not have accurately predicted just how bright her future would be. While delivering the commencement speech at her alma mater, Rutgers University, in May 2025, Dreyer shared that her first job only paid $17,000 yearly. In those days, she would wear a thick coat around her home in the winters to save on heating costs. To teach herself the ABCs of cooking, she had relied on a cookbook she bought at a garage sale (via Today). After about a decade of hard work, Dreyer got the opportunity to join the NBC family as a meteorologist.
Soon enough, she became a household name. In 2018, she had the coveted opportunity to cover the Winter Olympics. In the following year, she took her love for nature to a whole new level in "Earth Odyssey with Dylan Dreyer," a show that saw her getting up close and personal with wildlife and discussing their natural habitats. Dreyer evidently likes to keep her plate full, because she went on to become a co-host of the "Today" show's third hour.
After years of working in front of the camera, Dreyer decided to expand her horizons in 2021 and released the first installment of "Misty the Cloud," her children's book series. When Dreyer reflected on her impressive career during her commencement speech, she imparted a pearl of wisdom on the graduates: "Guys, in any field, you have to be YOU. You don't want to miss an opportunity because you were trying to be like someone else." And Dreyer arguably would have never felt confident enough to be her true self in front of a camera had she not undergone a stunning transformation.
The early years: Dylan Dreyer embraces her inner tomboy
During a 2021 interview with New Jersey Monthly, Dylan Dreyer shared that she grew up in a home in New Jersey that had been built from the ground up by her father, grandfather, and their pals. In her hometown of Manalapan Township was a farm where the future NBC anchor and her two older brothers would pick tomatoes. Additionally, during a February 2023 appearance on the "Off The Beat" podcast, she shared that she had developed an interest in softball after watching her brothers play the sport. So, she picked up a bat and started playing on an all-boys team when she was just 5 years old.
Her love for the game only blossomed with time, and she wound up on her high school softball team. Dreyer also confirmed that she was a bit of a tomboy in those days. And that bit of trivia is clear as day in the photo of her in a jersey from her high school days. Although she eventually grew to rock longer wavy hair, she was evidently happy to keep her hair short in those days so that her locks wouldn't hinder her gameplay.
However, when the time for prom came around, Dreyer couldn't help but embrace her femininity. For the important event, the high schooler decided to go with a sleeveless white floor-length gown with floral detailing in the front. Since the bridal-inspired outfit did the heavy lifting, Dreyer could keep accessories simple with a pair of minimalist earrings, a shiny bracelet, a few rings, and a white clutch.
1999-2003: Dylan Dreyer's passion for meteorology solidifies as her style evolves
During a May 2017 chat with NBC News, Dylan Dreyer shared that she initially wanted to study engineering at Rutgers University. However, she dropped the idea after realizing that she couldn't find a niche. Instead, she decided to put her knowledge from science and math classes to good use in Meteorology 101. Although Dreyer had been interested in weather for quite some time, she didn't realize that she wanted to pursue the subject professionally until she took the class. According to New Jersey Monthly, other than Dreyer, there was only one other woman who graduated with a major in meteorology from Rutgers in 2003. Thanks to all her hard work, Dreyer even got an academic distinction.
During Dreyer's time at college, she cemented her transition into adulthood by appearing as an extra in a 2002 episode of "Sex and the City." And that transformation also began to show up in her fashion choices. Since we're so used to seeing Dreyer wearing dresses and skirts on TV, it takes a moment to adjust to seeing her rocking a multi-colored blouse with splashes of contrasting color and patterns in the photo above. Even her darker hair and the early 2000s haircut that's reminiscent of the most iconic haircut of all time: The Rachel, seems like a complete 180 from her on-screen hairstyle. The only style constants that stood the test of time were Dreyer's minimalist jewelry choices. As a whole, though, it seemed like Dreyer started to bid farewell to the tomboy persona from her younger years during this era. And her stylistic choices undoubtedly made perfect sense for someone exploring their identity in their young adult years.
2004-2008: Dylan Dreyer looks unrecognizable during her early TV appearances
Fresh out of college, Dylan Dreyer started picking up student work with climate organizations to realize her dreams of becoming a research meteorologist. However, after one life-changing internship at WCBS-TV New York, she realized that she wanted to be in front of a camera. In a May 2022 episode of "Today," Dreyer revealed that her mother drove about eight hours so that she could audition for her TV gig at WICU in Erie, Pennsylvania. And the meteorologist wound up getting the job in 2003. In a November 2018 episode of "Today," Dreyer couldn't help but cringe as she watched a video of herself from her WICU days, in which she forgot where she was reporting from.
Based on the throwback video, it's obvious Dreyer preferred to keep her eye makeup light in the early days of her career. While her eyebrows look untouched, she does appear to be wearing a light shade of lipstick. Based on her necklace, it seems that she knew all about how to stylishly incorporate chunky jewelry into her wardrobe. Moreover, her earth-toned shirt gives the impression that she was all about the outdoorsy vibes in those days.
Eventually, she moved on from WICU to WJAR, NBC's affiliate in Rhode Island. Then, in 2007, she moved to Boston to work as a weekday morning meteorologist at another NBC affiliate, WHDH. There, she crossed paths with her future husband, Brian Fichera. In those days, her career looked just as promising as her personal life since she was also voted Boston's Best Meteorologist in 2008.
2012-2021: Dylan Dreyer gets married and finds her signature style
In 2012, Dylan Dreyer took her talents over to NBC in New York. During a September 2012 appearance on "Today," Dreyer confirmed that she was engaged to Brian Fichera and that he would be moving to New York with her. At the time, the meteorologist had quite a lot on her plate because her wedding was only three weeks away.
Based on Instagram photos from her October 2012 wedding, it's safe to say that her dress was pretty much the personification of Dreyer, as it was a balance between sophisticated and playful. For the big day, the NBC host opted for a white silk gown with beaded embellishments. For accessories, she kept things simple with a pair of eye-catching drop earrings and a minimalist bracelet. Dreyer also notably went with a bridal hairstyle that highlights short hair.
Additionally, she showcased her natural beauty by keeping her makeup understated. In those days, the look that we associate with Dreyer started to develop more clearly as her hair got blonder. And we also began to see more of the tailored knee-length dresses that became a part of Dreyer's signature look. However, the caveat was that we also saw a few Dylan Dreyer outfits that could be considered questionable for morning television during this era. While Dreyer's career and fashion horizons expanded, her family also grew. Dreyer welcomed her first child, Calvin Bradley Fichera, in 2016, followed by Oliver and Rusty in 2020 and 2021.
2022-Present: Dylan Dreyer undergoes yet another style transformation
Dylan Dreyer started to develop a bit of a love affair with fascinators in the mid 2020s. The classic accessory became the NBC host's prime choice for horse-racing events, including the annual Kentucky Derby. While attending the 2025 event, Dreyer decided to go with a navy blue ruched dress and a matching fascinator that did wonders for her complexion and matched the event's formal theme perfectly. The meteorologist looked just as stunning when she wore a bright pink floral lace dress and a pretty pink hat that had specks of blue for some contrast.
However, when the meteorologist wasn't attending fancy events, her style grew more laid back. To attend her son's first communion on Mother's Day 2024, Dreyer donned a flowy pink dress with puffy sleeves and a belt around the waist to add some shape. It seems that Dreyer knew all about the fashion-forward ways to wear florals in the summer because she also donned a flowy floral jumpsuit with a denim jacket when she stepped out to a Jake Owens concert with her friend in July 2025.
While Dreyer's style continued to evolve, her personal life went through some major changes. In July 2025, the NBC host took to Instagram to announce that she and Brian Fichera had called it quits after 12 years of marriage. While discussing their separation during a November 2025 episode of "Today with Jenna & Friends," Dreyer simply said that "There was something [they] couldn't fix" (via People). After that realization hit, the meteorologist and her partner decided that they were better off as co-parents. And so a new era of Dreyer's life began unfolding.
