Courtney Love's Inappropriate Outfit At The 2000 Golden Globes Looked Like Limp Party Streamers
Say what you will about Courtney Love, but she has never been afraid to take risks with fashion. While attending the Golden Globes ceremony in 2000, the rocker opted for a Christian Dior dress from the Spring 2000 "Haute Homeless" collection. The dress wasn't just controversial because it drew inspiration from people who were struggling in life, but also due to the fact that it was quite inappropriate for a formal event.
While the top half of the dress gave the impression that Love had to pry it out of an angry cat's claws, the bottom half looked like a floor after a New Year's Eve bash. Moreover, the top half of Love's dress showed a bit too much skin for the formal event, and seemed dangerously close to a wardrobe malfunction. During an April 2019 chat with The Guardian, the singer-songwriter asserted that she was unsure how she had managed to keep the dress in place throughout the night because she hadn't even applied breast tape.
Notably, there is a way to apply boob tape so it actually stays put all day. However, the fact that Love managed to get through the night without having a malfunction was, by her own admission (and probably everyone else's estimation), "a miracle." All in all, the one saving grace of one of the most inappropriate outfits in Golden Globes history was that it beautifully accentuated Love's figure and helped her show off her killer legs. Unfortunately that wasn't enough for it to avoid joining the list of the worst Golden Globes looks of all time.
Courtney Love stole the show at multiple award ceremonies in the '90s
Courtney Love's reputation for trouble made many high-end brands hesitant to dress her for the 1995 Oscars, per El País. However, the "Violet" singer didn't let that stop her, and she bought a $20 slip-on floor-length champagne-colored slip dress to wear to the Vanity Fair after-party. For accessories, she went with what appeared to be a plastic tiara that looked like it had been taken straight out of a child's princess costume. Although Love looked undeniably beautiful, the dress wasn't exactly the right fit for a formal party.
To her credit, Love ended up nailing the tone of the event at the 1997 Oscars by wearing an absolutely stunning white Versace gown that was a stark departure from her grungy and thrifted looks of the past. The Grammy nominee went all out for the elegant look, accessorizing with a gorgeous diamond necklace and donning a pair of pointy white flats.
This time around, some people weren't pleased that she had gotten all glammed up instead of staying true to her original style. Addressing the criticism at the 1998 VMAs, Love said, "We, as females, have thousands and thousands of years of fashion in our DNA. We want to wear nice f***ing clothes" (via Instagram). She continued, "If you have the opportunity to go to the Oscars in a fabulous gown and be absolutely fabulous, you're gonna f****ing take it."
