Nicole Richie's Daughter Kate Madden Is The Perfect Mix Of Both Her Parents

Nicole Richie was a reality star who rocked the most iconic Y2K hairstyles back in the day, but since 2008, she became a mom of two and settled down with Joel Madden of Good Charlotte. Although she grew up in the spotlight while filming "The Simple Life" with Paris Hilton, who has had a stunning face transformation since the early aughts, Richie's kids' lives are more private. But fans saw just how much her daughter, Kate Madden, inherited both her parents' genes. While at the premiere of "Stop! That! Train!" Richie posed with the 18-year-old, and it was like looking at the reality star from years ago. The two share gorgeous, wide-set eyes and amazing bone structure, but it's clear Kate is in her rocker era, just like her dad. With her fairy grunge soft goth spin on ethereal makeup and matching leather dress, she looked ready to belt out some screamo music.

Although Kate is a goth girl now, throwback pics of her as a child have us doing a double-take, as she looked just like a younger Richie. In an Instagram post shared in January 2026, the "Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead" star shared a carousel of throwback snaps that showed her daughter with the same tawny curls and infectious smile. "I really thought that was an AI-generated picture of Joel with a baby Nicole!!! She's your twin! Gorgeous!" a fan commented. Kate may be the spitting image of Richie, but personality-wise, she shares some of her father's traits.

Although Kate Madden has both parents living in the spotlight, she liked to live a quieter life, even as a kid. Back in 2016, Nicole Richie and Joel Madden took their kids on tour with Good Charlotte, but the fashion designer told People that Kate didn't always attend the shows. "She's a little more reserved. She'll hang out on the bus and do art. The bus is awesome," Richie revealed.

It seems she got that reserved nature from Joel, despite him being the lead singer of his band. In a 2013 interview with "60 Minutes Australia," Richie recalled meeting her now-husband at a party and noting how he barely spoke. "I would say that Joel is a very shy introvert ... who enjoys life, who loves music, has such a deep passion for music, and anybody who shares that same passion he will go above and beyond for," Richie gushed. 

As for Joel, he thinks their kids take after his wife. While on "The Drew Barrymore Show," the rocker said, "We got lucky with our kids. They're easy. I always tell my kids, 'You make it so easy to be a dad.'" He added, "They're great. And I think they're like their mom." Kate definitely has the best of both worlds, in both looks and style.
