Madonna Was Told Her 1984 MTV VMAs Look Would Derail Her Career - Now It's Legendary
If we're being honest, there aren't all that many truly iconic celebrity outfits which are immediately recognizable, era defining, and forever linked to the wearer. However, the white lace and tulle dress that Madonna wore when she performed for the first time at the MTV Video Music Awards in 1984 absolutely belongs on that list. Part wedding dress, part lingerie, it's one of those celeb outfits from the '80s that look cooler today, and some variation of it is bound to show up at any '80s-themed hangout or Halloween party. Ironically, her then-manager thought the look — and the performance itself — would kill the pop star's career.
Well, more specifically, it had to do with a wardrobe malfunction Madonna had while performing in the outfit. When she swung by "The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon" back in August 2022, Madonna recalled that during the performance, one of her white pumps fell off. She told Fallon, "I was trying to do like this smooth move and dive for the shoe and make it look like it was choreography, and my dress flipped up and my butt was showing. ... I didn't even know my butt was showing. But when I went backstage my manager told me my career was over with." But as it turns out, the slip up was no biggie. In fact, the performance helped propel her career, and the legendary white dress in question will go down as one of Madonna's best-dressed moments from her most iconic style decade.
Madonna's Like A Virgin album sold 21 million copies
So, it's settled then — if you're seeking an '80s vibe, Madonna should definitely be one of the pop culture style icons you should left influence your wardrobe. But don't forget about your playlist! The "Queen of Pop" first rose to fame in the early '80s with her self-titled debut album, which included three Billboard Top 20 singles. Madonna's second studio album, "Like A Virgin," boasted juggernaut tracks like "Material Girl," "Over and Over," and, of course, "Like A Virgin." The album would go on to sell 21 million copies worldwide.
On "The Tonight Show," the pop icon told Fallon that she and some of her team thought "Like A Virgin" would stir up controversy, and there was some initial debate about whether that or "Material Girl" should be the debut single from the album. Of course, it end up being "Like A Virgin," though they weren't exactly wrong about the controversy. The song itself was decried by conservative groups for being obscene, and even the singer's name has been called blasphemous by those who claim her "stage name" is a mockery of the Virgin Mary — though that's grasping at straws. Sure, she's leaned into it, but the Queen of Pop's birth name is actually Madonna Ciccone.
