Jane Fonda's Stunning Style Evolution, In Photos

When you're talking about a Hollywood star whose career has spanned several decades, chronicling how said celeb's style has transformed over the years gets really fun. Jane Fonda has been racking up the film and TV credits since the early '60s, so we're not just talking about going from skinny jeans to baggy ones. Fans of Fonda have seen her hit the Mod style of the '60s, the opulence of the '80s, the chic minimalism of the 2020s, and every other stop along the way. 

And it's not just her fashion that's evolving. At 88 years old in 2026, Jane Fonda is reframing how she thinks of beauty as she ages, too. For example, she's joined the ranks of celebrities who proudly show off their gray hair. However, no evolution was needed when it came to hitting the mark with her style. Fonda has remained a regular on the red carpet, at glitzy awards shows, and politically-focused events, serving looks that run the gamut, from playful to sophisticated.

Back in 1965, Jane Fonda was caught kicking up her feet and lounging with a cigarette at the famous Savoy Hotel in London, shown in the left photo. Those feet were adorned in two-toned classic pumps, which perfectly complemented her light-colored tweed skirt suit — and we can totally see the '60s in her teased hair. In the photo on the right, Fonda was hanging out in New York City in 1967 with her now-ex-husband, Roger Vadim, dressed in a plaid tweed mini skirt, black blouse, tights, and rock 'n' roll-approved combat boots. 

Jane Fonda is just as well known for being a political activist as she is an actor, and, in 1976, it certainly seems like the Hollywood icon was going for a simpler style so she could focus her attention on the causes she was passionate about. In the photo on the left, Fonda is seen wearing a layered look that features a black cape over a loose-fitting dress. On the right, she rocked what seems to be a different but similar cape, worn over a rouge-colored caftan. In both shots, her long chestnut-brown hair delivered a barely-brushed vibe that was popular during the time.

The '80s were decidedly not the era of quiet luxury, and Jane Fonda was definitely on top of the style shift. The photo on the left was snapped in 1986, while Fonda was out and about rocking a shiny red button-down blouse, chocolate-brown leather pants, and a statement belt. Oh, and don't miss the red leather jacket slung over her arm. On the right, Fonda attended the New York City premiere of "Old Gringo" in 1989, dressed in a patterned blouse that was a happy mess of multi-colored glitter that stood out against her black, belted slacks.

A good suit can always use a little Jane Fonda charm. On the left, she was photographed while at the second annual Gleitsman Citizen Activist Award ceremony in Beverly Hills in 1991. She donned khaki-colored slacks, a blazer with a subtle plaid pattern, and a striped blouse, topped off with a haphazardly tied scarf around her neck. On the right, in 1999, the Fonda family was being honored at the American Film Institute Awards, and Fonda wore a suit jacket with cropped sleeves and prominent gold buttons, and flared trousers. We're also loving her '90s blowout with its wispy bangs.

Jane Fonda was caught coming back to her hotel in New York City in February 2002 after a V-Day party for "The Vagina Monologues," seen on the left. She was dressed in a vibrant red suit and rocked a shaggy, Y2K-approved haircut. On the right, Fonda wore a near-identical hue when she attended a charity celebrity roast in Atlanta in 2006, where she just so happened to be the guest of honor. Befitting her position as that night's roastee, Fonda stole the show with a figure-hugging mermaid dress with buttons at the neckline and along the hip. 

When Jane Fonda attended amfAR's Cinema Against AIDS gala in Antibes, France, in 2011, the "Barbarella" star managed to deliver equal parts spice and glamour. Fonda donned a slinky cream-colored gown adorned with shimmering teal tiger stripes and rocking her signature short, layered hair. She busted out the animal print again when she swung by a town hall hosted by SiriusXM in New York City in 2018. For that event, Fonda opted for a floor-length cheetah-print overcoat that oozed old-money aesthetic, a classic fashion trend that's had a modern comeback. 

In the photo on the left, Jane Fonda attended the screening of "Common Ground" in 2023 during the Tribeca Festival in New York City, wearing a light peach-colored suit, paired with a classic white tee. On the right, the Oscar winner was snapped arriving at the Women's Media Awards in NYC in 2025. For that event, she wore a baby-blue satin suit, decorated with a single strand of pearls, and we especially love how she's been embracing her gray hair. Throughout all her style eras, whether she's dressed casually for her work as an activist or rocking an awards show look, Jane Fonda rarely winds up on the worst-dressed list.
