Shirt Styles That Are Firmly Outdated In 2026

We are officially over halfway through 2026. While the passage of time is always a slightly scary thought, reaching this midway point also means that the trends of the year are generally solidified. We've already narrowed down the outdated trends you won't want to be caught wearing in summer 2026, so now we're taking a broader look at the rest of the year. Namely, what tops have already reached their peak of popularity and are downtrending. Overarching trends of the year indicate that retro is still reigning supreme, but the decades we're pulling from have differed. Instead of the 1950s-inspired rolled-sleeve T-shirt, we're looking to the '80s for inspiration.

Now, other of the year's outdated shirt trends aren't retro revamps; rather, they're modern trends that have overstayed their welcome. Boxy longline vests that pervaded workwear throughout the mid-2020s are finally going to be swapped out for silky blouses and '80s-style power-shoulder blazers — which is one of the biggest retro trends no longer outdated for 2026. Basic tank tops are also seeing a big upheaval, as traditional scoop necklines are on the outs. This year, the most dated shirts have one thing in common: they've all been replaced by superior counterparts that better suit our needs in 2026.

Basic tank tops are getting a chic upgrade

You can't go wrong with a ribbed tank top; this piece can be styled with high-quality denim for a model off-duty look, or layered underneath a linen shirt or jacket for the transition between summer and fall. Still, some cuts are slowly going out of style. Scoop or crewneck cut tanks may be classic, but they're not universally flattering. For those with broad shoulders, the higher neckline can emphasize that and the impression of being top-heavy. While these cuts will never fully go out of style, this year, we're employing the use of a more dynamic neckline that toes the line between chic and slightly unconventional.

2026 has seen celebrities and everyday individuals swapping out basic tank cuts for a more updated take on the classic top: the V-neck. A V-cut neckline is an easy way to elevate your basic white tank style beyond smart accessories and unique denim pairings. The low V shape looks good on everyone, no matter the width of your shoulders or chest size. Besides, it's more customizable than you'd think. Loose-fitting V-neck tanks are perfect for casual, bohemian outfits when paired with baggy trousers, and tops that cling to you can tap into the aforementioned "model off-duty" vibe that is always evergreen.

Structured vests won't rule fall 2026

Over the past few years, women everywhere have been employing the use of longline vests for their trendy yet professional ensembles. Some have even brought tailored vests' workwear silhouettes to their casual outfits. The button-up tops have been pushed by almost every fashion retailer out there, both high- and low-end, as the trend has remained dominant for longer than anticipated. 2026 is projected to see a major change: the longline button-up vest is on its way out. The structured shape may have been a transformative take on menswear a few years ago, but it has become a little dated and predictable.

Slim-fit silky blouses are taking the place of vests in women's workwear this year. Instead of the ultra-tailored, boxy shape that most modern longline vests have, these blouses are perfectly fit to the body (not tight and clingy or oversized and flowy), making them timeless and versatile. Most wear vests in neutral colors like black, white, or tan, which can create a dull effect that makes your entire outfit look drab. On the other hand, satin blouses come in a variety of bold colors that span neutrals and bright statement shades, breathing life into your work ensembles.

We're retiring knot waist t-shirts

Crop tops have been in style for quite a long time, and we don't see them going out of style anytime soon. However, one particular crop top trend is incredibly dated: the knot-waist. Instead of being cropped uniformly, these shirts feature a large knot at the front that pulls the top upwards, creating a DIY-ed crop effect. While this works if you need to tie up a shirt in a pinch, it isn't the most stylish when the shirt is designed to purposefully be knotted at the midsection. Instead, ringer baby tees are overtaking other crop top trends in 2026.

Unlike knot-waist t-shirts, ringer baby tees feature a lower hemline that, while still cropped, is more versatile — you can emphasize it being cropped by wearing low-rise bottoms, or make the look more classic by opting for mid-rise cuts that close the gap, exposing your abdomen. Ringer baby tees also include rings of color around the neckline and sleeve cuffs, providing a subtly retro touch to any outfit. While there are many ways to style a crop top beyond the basic, ringer baby tees are shaping up to be one of our favorites this year.

Shirts with pre-rolled sleeves aren't in style anymore

While retro trends aren't outdated anymore in 2026, pre-rolled sleeves just haven't made the cut. The 1950s vibes of a white T-shirt with rolled sleeves had women and men mesmerized throughout the 2010s — even though The Cut pointed out in 2017 that getting the perfect roll at home was trickier than it should be. To simultaneously meet the trend and do the hard work for consumers, brands began selling shirts with pre-rolled sleeves. However, by mid-2026, their time in the trend cycle has long since ended. Another casual shirt has emerged to take its place.

Rather than wear a retro rolled-sleeve white shirt, try the modern long-sleeved white T-shirt. Long-sleeve shirts are incredibly versatile, and can transition between seasons beautifully (meaning that you don't have to stuff them in your summer storage during the winter and vice versa); they can be layered during the cooler months, and paired with loose trousers or cut-off denim shorts when it's hot. For summer 2026, many have styled oversized long-sleeve tops in nearly every color for a relaxed, boyfriend sweater vibe. But slim-fit iterations of the classic have had their moment as well, with celebs like Hailey Bieber rocking them throughout the season.
