Twiggy's Signature Hairstyle In The '60s Was Beloved By Everyone - Except Her

Twiggy is known for having one of the most iconic haircuts in history, after she debuted her signature blond pixie cut in 1966. While the short androgynous crop with sweeping bangs launched her career, the supermodel, whose real name is Lesley Hornby, didn't necessarily love the haircut at first. In fact, she said on the "Table Manners with Jessie and Lennie Ware" podcast in 2020 that she was actually growing her hair out when the late Leonard Lewis decided to try his "new haircut" on her, after she went into his salon for a wash and set. "For a moment I kind of went, 'I don't know whether I want my hair cut.' But I was in this very posh salon in Mayfair so I was a bit too shy to say I don't want it done," Twiggy recalled. She even admitted to being near tears over the cut, but went through with it anyway.

While the edgy Mod look was a big change for Twiggy, Lewis had a vision. "I knew it would show off her boyish looks — and no boy had eyes or a neck quite like hers," he told Dazed in 2008. Twiggy's look perfectly captured the '60s vibe, and in February 1966 she was dubbed "The Face of '66" by The Daily Express. "On that day in February, my life changed forever, " Twiggy told Vogue in 2025. While that hairstyle may have changed her life, Twiggy has since changed her hairstyle into something that's more her.

Twiggy may be known for the sleek, side-parted pixie cut that she had in the 1960's, but that's not what legendary '60s model Twiggy looks like now. That's because Twiggy has since grown her hair out into a longer shoulder-length bob. While she didn't keep her cut, she did keep her signature color.  She told The Guardian in 2016, "I have had highlights since I was 16 ... So I have always been a blonde — out of a bottle." She kept a version of her bangs too, because she finds them flattering.

Twiggy is wearing her hair how she prefers it now, but she did have one of the iconic hairstyles from the '60s that are making a comeback. Her entire '60's Mod aesthetic has had a lasting impact, and celebrities are still copying her famous hairstyle to this day. In 2021, actor Sienna Miller sat down for a joint interview with Twiggy for L'Officiel, and said, "Surely every English girl or woman has been influenced by Twiggy."

Although Twiggy originally didn't want to cut her hair, it's a look that's stood the test of time, so it's a good thing she didn't tell her stylist to put down the scissors. "I still get fan mail, and a lot of it is from teenage girls, usually between the ages of 16 and 24, who are obsessed with the '60s," she said in her interview with L'Officiel. People may love Twiggy's '60's hairstyle, but it's safe to say that she will always be that girl who can pull off any look she wants!
