Shania Twain's Journey To Finding The Love She'll 'Grow Old With' Is A Reminder To Keep Your Heart Open
Shania Twain ascended to icon status long ago, somewhere between her culture-piercing hit songs, her sold-out world tours, and her well-deserved five Grammys. The Canadian-born songstress started performing in her hometown bars, recorded her first album in 1991, and she's since become the biggest-selling female artist in country music history. Twain has also dazzled us with buzzy style and beauty moments. Who could ever forget the birdcage top hat from the "Man! I Feel Like A Woman!" music video? And there's been no shortage of Shania Twain's best hair looks that prove she's never afraid to have fun.
Twain has also been lucky in love, but it took some time getting there. She and husband Frédéric Thiébaud, a Swiss businessman, have been married since 2011. They started dating in 2009, when Twain was in her 40s — situating her among the celebs who got married later in life. It's the second go-round for both of them; Twain was married before, to producer Robert "Mutt" Lange, from 1993 to 2010. About Thiébaud, Twain told People in a 2026 interview, "This is the love I'm going to grow old with, and it's a beautiful feeling."
She said it's Thiébaud's knack for communication that helps keep their marriage strong. He's not afraid to face issues head-on. "He's not inhibited at all with expressing his feelings, which is really wonderful in a man." Twain told the outlet, "I'm sure we'll always have romance, but there's a depth and a gratitude that I have about having this love." The singer is convinced Thiébaud is the love of her life, saying, "If I [had] met Fred as a teenager, I do believe that he would have been my lifelong love even from then. It just takes sometimes years to find that person." This is certainly inspiring.
Shania Twain's road to love wasn't just long — it was soap-opera winding
Shania Twain and Frédéric Thiébaud's relationship was birthed through shared trauma. Twain's first husband, Robert "Mutt" Lange, reportedly had an affair with Thiébaud's ex-wife — who was also a close friend of Twain's. The affair led to the end of both marriages. "It was a very low period in my life," Twain told People in 2022. In the years since the scandal, the singer has found peace and settled into something that looks like forgiveness. About Lange, she said, "I'm able to have more appreciation for him again, not for what happened in our marriages, but for all that he contributed to such a great part of my career and my life. We have a beautiful child from it. The resentment is gone."
In the thick of it, though, Twain thought she was done playing the love game. "When I got divorced I said, 'I'm never getting married again.'" One celeb who can likely relate is Heidi Klum, who never planned to remarry after her divorce from Seal, but then love struck. Same thing for Twain, who only had a change of heart when she met Thiébaud. Ultimately, she told People, "We were a big part of each other's healing [...] Fred was such an undeniable love."
