5 Style Trends That Became Firmly Outdated In Record Time

The trend cycle moves fast. Even before the micro-trend market that has dominated the fashion world over the past decade, some fads came and went within mere months. From hairstyles to accessories to clothing and shoes, many of the most popular fashion currents of today won't last as long as you'd think. The decade has already seen some major styles come in and out of fashion in record time. These trends experienced a brief re-emergence before fizzling out just as fast as they appeared. 

Many of the early aughts and '90s fashion trends that came back in style are among the most quickly outdated styles of today. Small, narrow sunglasses (like the ones Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy wore) experienced a short revival in 2025, thanks to today's celebs, before quietly being replaced by oversized sunnies just a few months later. Mom jeans, which were brought back from the '90s during the mid-2010s' hipster boom, similarly came back very briefly. These and other very well-known styles have one thing in common: a fleeting place in the fashion cycle.

Mom jeans were one of the first '90s trends to come back into mainstream fashion. In the middle of the 2010s, the retro cut once beloved in the late '80s and early '90s re-emerged as one of the biggest denim trends. The trousers featured a high waist, loose hips, and a straight, tapered leg, which provided a vintage vibe for the hipsters who dominated mainstream culture throughout the decade. While mom jeans got their name through a mocking "Saturday Night Live" skit in 2003, women reclaimed the old-school denim trend just 10 years later. 

However popular they were in the mid to late 2010s, mom jeans quickly died out at the beginning of the 2020s. While they've made very brief returns (none of which ever made it back to the mainstream), mom jeans are decidedly unfashionable. Wearing super high-waisted mom jeans is one of the jeans mistakes that are making you look older. Fortunately, there are plenty of stylish alternatives for those who still cling to the comfortable cut. For one, barrel leg jeans are an on-trend denim silhouette with a higher waistband and wide legs that taper at the ankle. They look particularly flattering on people with wider hips, and give off a more modern vibe than outdated mom jeans.

Hailey Bieber has been at the forefront of trends for a few years now. The Rhode founder can make anything chic, even a clunky lipgloss-holding phone case. The stunning style transformation of Hailey Bieber has seen the model influencing fashion on many occasions. One of the trends Bieber is credited with re-starting is narrow sunglasses. When Bieber posted a mirror selfie wearing a pair of slim sunnies from Giant Vintage in November 2025, they quickly sold out. However, as fast as she helped bring the '90s style of sunglasses back into fashion, they left. In 2026, the pendulum swung back in the other direction quite dramatically.

While slimmer oval-shaped sunnies are still in style, Bieber's favored narrow shape has largely been replaced by oversized silhouettes. Just a few months after narrow sunglasses emerged as a trend, more and more people began embracing another retro style: '60s-esque circular frames. As sleek '90s minimalism exits the trend cycle, vintage maximalism sees oversized, dramatically shaped sunglasses returning to the mainstream. 

2020 was one of the strangest years in the trend cycle. COVID-19 lockdowns saw millions of people stuck inside, with social media as their only outlet for connection and self-expression. As such, many short-lived trends were born on platforms like Instagram and TikTok. One of the briefest trends of this period was cow print. The ultra-graphic, almost cartoon-like pattern was used on handbags, hats, dresses, and trousers as a fun, retro-inspired trend mid-pandemic. Now, the print has largely been replaced by more grounded alternatives like leopard, zebra, and even deer. 

However, a rustic, "authentic" style of cow print has emerged as an elevated replacement. As more people go to animal patterns to bring a touch of contrast to their otherwise neutral outfits (or go all-in on the expressive prints as a maximalist statement), rustic cow print has had a slight boost in popularity for those who opt for a Western aesthetic. Nevertheless, the graphic cow print that experienced a short stint in the trend cycle in 2020 is long gone. 

Printed leggings were one of the retro revival trends of the 2010s. The early to mid 2010s saw leggings covered in bold patterns like animal print, neon chevron, and galaxy designs emerge as a trend within the indie sleaze subculture. '80s-esque leggings were either worn on their own as pants or underneath black mini shorts, allowing their bold patterns to take center stage. While patterned leggings were one of the leggings trends taking over fall 2025, their re-emergence was short-lived. Today, printed leggings just haven't managed to regain their former popularity in any significant way. 

Even though printed leggings as pants are firmly outdated, patterned sheer tights have come back as a stylish alternative. Unlike gaudy printed leggings, bold tights in argyle, sheer black animal print, or delicate lace are bringing an elevated touch to any look. They're a fun addition to any skirt or dress without appearing as over-the-top retro as patterned leggings often do. 

Shearling coats, often called teddy bear coats, reached the peak of their popularity in the late 2010s. Max Mara's pricey full-length teddy bear coat debuted in 2013 and spread through the fashion industry like wildfire. A few years later, nearly every brand (high-end and fast fashion alike) was selling out their own version of the cozy jacket. 

The coat did briefly come back in 2025. Thanks in part to celebs like Taylor Swift rocking a teddy bear jacket in public, many were hopeful that the coats would return to the mainstream. While shearling leather jackets are the trendy coat you don't want to ignore this winter, full shearling coats haven't quite managed to come back in any significant way. Every trend can experience a revival in the years after its death, but we project that teddy bear coats will continue to be outdated in the near future.
