The Most Popular '80s-Inspired Baby Names Of 2026 (So Far)

With all the reboots of fan-favorite TV shows and movies happening these days, it shouldn't come as a surprise that parents are feeling nostalgic enough to bring back some names from their own childhoods. This seems to be especially true with '80s-inspired monikers, many of which have made most popular baby names lists of 2026 so far. Sure, '80s classics like Jessica and Michael aren't the top spot-holders on most of these current lists, but others in the top 100 are giving '80s. Some parents are moving away from the modern and experimental names of the 2000s to those with a more vintage feel. As naming expert Laura Wattenberg explained to Today, parents are going with "name sources that were traditional and familiar but not standard in grandpa's day."

This is especially helpful for parents who may want to call their baby by their favorite name from childhood, but feel it would be too cheesy or outdated. And while we don't necessarily feel you should name your baby something trendy, it could be nice to know that your baby's name will still be cool — even if it's from the same time period that brought us shoulder pads and all the other things people actually found attractive in the '80s. Yet, just because some of the new popular baby names are inspired by the '80s, doesn't mean they all have the same vibe. 

Perhaps one of the more interesting trends regarding the popular '80s-inspired baby names of this year so far is that they were used throughout history by famous royals. For example, Elizabeth has been popular since the 16th century when Queen Elizabeth I reigned, but it took the 9th spot on the Social Security Administration's list for babies born in the 1980s. That's probably due to Queen Elizabeth II, who, like her daughter-in-law Princess Diana, was well-loved during that decade. Elizabeth is still popular for 2026, ranking pretty high at number 33 by Baby Center.

Victoria is another popular '80s-inspired name that holds steady at number 75 on Baby Center's list, after it climbed throughout the 1980's to the 56th spot on the SSA list. And while new moms may be inspired by the not-royal-but-should-be Victoria Beckham, Queen Victoria and the Victorian Era were probably part of that name's appeal.

For boys, of course we can't forget William, which is the 41st most popular boy name in 2026. In the 1980s, it was the 15th most popular name, partially thanks to the 1982 birth of Prince William. Sure, it's not the one of the most unique royal family baby names, but it is '80s-inspired if you look at it from that point of view. 

Parents have been into the vintage baby names you can make feel fresh in 2026, so it makes sense that some of the most popular '80s-inspired baby names of this year so far also have a classic feel. Baby Center ranks the soft and gentle sounding Hannah at number 71, for instance. Hannah means grace or favor in Hebrew, and comes from the Bible. Almost every millennial born in the late '80s knew a Hannah growing up, since it broke the top 100 list of names in 1986, per Nameberry. 

Another now-popular '80s-inspired girl name with a similar sweet and feminine vibe is Emily, ranking at number 55 on Baby Center's list for 2026. While it's not as popular as Emma is these days, Emily paved the way for Emma, since Emily exploded onto baby name charts in the 1980s before becoming the top baby name for girls in the following decade.

Then there's James, which Baby Notebook ranks as the 9th most popular baby name of 2026 and the third among boys. While it's obviously a classic moniker, it was a top 10 boy name for the first half of the 1980s. Given that over 300,000 U.S. boys were named James in the '80s, many people associate it with that decade, even if it's been popular for centuries.

Romantic names of Spanish and Latin origin have always been popular, but a few that have been in demand this year are '80s-inspired, like Maria. Maria, which ranks at number 69 on Baby Center's most popular baby names of 2026 list, is tied to the Bible and has been favored since 1800s. Yet, it was especially popular in the 1980s, having remained steady in the Social Security Administration's top 50 names chart throughout the entire decade. In was especially popular in California, with over 18,000 babies from there given that name between 1980 and 1989, per Stacker, presumably due to its multi-cultural population.

Mateo is another Spanish-sounding name that is super popular this year, having ranked at number 5 on Baby Center's list. While Mateo isn't exactly '80s-inspired, Matthew, the English version of it, definitely is. In fact, Matthew held the number 3 spot for most popular boy name for that entire decade. Nostalgic parents can have the Matthew they loved from childhood or make it more romantic and trendy with Mateo instead. 

You could say that 2026's most popular names are '80s-inspired, even if the connection isn't immediately obvious. That's because a lot of the names that are close to the top of Baby Center's list began climbing popularity charts in the 1980s. Lucas, for one, moved into the top 100 in 1980, thanks to "Star Wars," and is now number 7 on Baby Center's list. Noah, the number one most popular baby name for boys now, also began to gain popularity in the late '80s when it started to slowly rise on the chart.

This year's most popular girl name, Olivia, could also be '80s-inspired, not only because it finally began to rise in popularity in the late '80s, but because it's also heavily associated with '80s icon Olivia Newton-John. Sophia is another popular girl name of 2026 that also began to slowly rise in use during the last couple years of that decade. So, new parents or friends of those with babies, get ready for a throwback, because the '80s are still inspiring us today.
