Vanessa And Nick Lachey Live By This Simple Marriage Rule
Making any relationship work in the long term can be a tall task — even with an amazing partner. Working with your beau adds an extra layer of trickiness, but Nick Lachey says his and wife Vanessa Lachey's personal and professional relationships coexist thanks to one simple rule: Work stays at work. The pair married in July 2011 after dating for five years, and have three children together. Nick and Vanessa also co-host the Netflix dating shows "Love is Blind" and "The Ultimatum" together. On "The Richer Lives" podcast in 2025, Nick said, "I think the best thing you can do is not bring your work home with you, which is tricky when you work with your spouse." He added, "That's our golden rule, don't bring work home, don't bring home to work. Try and keep it as separate as you can." If you can strike that balance with minimal dust-up, count that as one of the signs that you're in a healthy relationship.
Glam tapped celebrity love coach Nicole Moore for her thoughts around work-love balance. Moore agrees that maintaining that divider is important. "Who we are in business is often a different version of ourselves than who we are romantically," she tells Glam exclusively. "It's important to make that distinction between which of your partner's selves is operating at any given time and not merge the two." Moore explains that one consequence of letting boundaries fall is that you risk becoming complacent. "If partners bring work home too often, they can lose touch with their emotional connection and attraction for one another. When couples don't set firm boundaries around work time and relationship time, they often end up spending way too much time on business and they neglect the quality time needed to make the relationship thrive."
For couples who work together like Nick and Vanessa Lachey, our expert says balance is key
Celebrity love coach Nicole Moore agrees with Nick Lachey's philosophy around trying not to bring work home. For couples like Nick and Vanessa Lachey who actually work together it becomes trickier, but Moore says designated spaces help. "One of the best ways for couples who work together to create a lifestyle balance is to have strict work zones and work-free zones at home," Moore shares in our exclusive chat. "If couples must bring some work home, it's best that they always do it in an office or designated work area rather than letting work time bleed into areas like the bedroom or shared spaces." The same applies when trying to figure out how to keep your relationship healthy when you both work from home, which is common today.
Moore adds, "It's important for these couples to also have strict rules around communication, such as no work talk after a certain hour or making sure to not let arguments about work turn into arguments about their partnership. It is ok to bring work home in moderation if couples also ensure they have adequate time for romance and connection." It can take time to learn how to communicate your wants in a relationship, but it's a necessary ingredient in figuring out how to balance work and foster long-lasting love.
To Moore's point about connection, Vanessa spoke with E! News in an interview published in February 2023, and recalled a date night with Nick. She said, "We just were talking at dinner and we had the best time, and we learned a lot more about each other that we don't usually get in the hustle and bustle of kids and work."
