Whether you know her from "10 Things I Hate About You" or "Hustlers," Julia Stiles is definitely an actor who leaves an impact. Having kicked off her career in the '90s as a teen, Stiles has been in Hollywood through all the industry's fashion and beauty changes, be it the colorful Y2K trends or the full glam makeup of the late 2010s. Nevertheless, Stiles managed to do one thing that many have failed to do — stay true to herself. While the star embraced certain changes in her appearance, she never strayed too far from the styles she likes. And as one of the celebs who is even more gorgeous in real life, Stiles was always at the center of attention, regardless of whether she was rocking a dramatic smoky eye or no makeup at all.

Speaking to Interview in 2016, Stiles, who was born and raised in New York City, shared that her love for acting began early. "My grandmother took me to a lot of theater. I was exposed to performance quite a bit — everything from Broadway to off-Broadway and dance and music as well. I was very lucky that way. It was a very rich childhood." Since then, Stiles reached international fame as a teen, opted to continue her education despite her Hollywood success, lived life and fell in love off camera, and seemingly has minimal regrets. Now in her 40s, Stiles is as down-to-earth and approachable as a celebrity can be, and while seeing where her life goes next is exciting, a look back at everything she has achieved proves that being authentic is always the right choice.

1998-2004: Julia Stiles explored Y2K fashion and chopped off her hair

Julia Stiles began acting in the second half of the '90s, and in 1999 she had her big breakthrough thanks to the teen drama "10 Things I Hate About You." The role propelled her into stardom, and the film's fashion gave us one of the most iconic rom-com outfits to recreate for your main character moment.

Still in her late teens as the new millennium began, Stiles fashion was all about exploring shapes and colors she liked. Fun dresses were a red carpet staple, but as Hollywood's fashion expectations were much more relaxed at the time, Stiles' makeup and hair often looked simple and achieved with minimal products. In fact, in a 2020 conversation with Today, Stiles reflected on the look she wore to the 2001 MTV Movie Awards, revealing that she put together the look by herself. "OK, so this was a choice that was a bolder choice than I would probably make nowadays in my maturity. I mean, I bought a Mets T-shirt, and I cut it up," she shared. By 2002, the actor underwent a dramatic hair change by chopping her locks off and rocking a chic chin-length bob.

Unlike numerous other child stars, Stiles opted to continue her education, enrolling in Columbia University. "I get up early on the weekends, because I usually have schoolwork to do," she shared in a 2001 conversation with Rolling Stone. While Stiles kept her personal life out of the spotlight, she briefly dated her "10 Things I Hate About You " co-star Joseph Gordon-Levitt in the late '90s. "We're friends," the actor shared after their breakup, adding, "We say hello to each other."

2005-2011: Julia Stiles opened up about diet culture and her simple fashion style

In 2005, Julia Stiles graduated from Columbia University with an English Literature degree. The star continued acting, appearing in the thrillers "Edmond" and "The Cry of the Owl," but her career noticeably slowed down. Stiles, who was now in her 20s, continued showcasing a simpler approach to beauty, as the actor often wore minimal makeup and let her natural wavy hair show. In a 2009 conversation with Stuff, Stiles shared that the industry's fashion expectations aren't something she cares about. "That's one reason why being at college was such a joy. If you overdressed or wore too much makeup you just seem a bit frivolous," she admitted.

In 2006, Stiles shared that diet culture is not something she endorses, explaining that there are better things to focus on. "If women could channel all the time and energy they spend on diets and food issues into something else, we'd be running the world. Or maybe I'm crazy," she told Marie Claire, adding that she wants to use her fame for important matters. "As a celebrity, I'm kind of stuck. I have to accept that I'm going to get a certain amount of attention whether I deserve it or not, and maybe I want to use that for some kind of good, you know?"

In 2011, Stiles began dating fellow actor David Harbour, as both of them lived in New York City. The actor continued keeping her personal life private, telling Stuff, "The more you know about an actor's personal life, and have a sense of where they go clubbing, who they are dating and where they go shopping, it's harder to believe them on the screen. I mean I do it, so I know it's true."

2012-2018: Julia Stiles embraced bolder makeup as she starts her family

While Julia Stiles and David Harbor remained together through the first half of the 2010s, the couple parted ways in 2015. In 2014, Stiles met camera assistant Preston Cook on the set of the thriller film "Blackway," and a year later the two began dating. Soon after, they got engaged. In 2017, Stiles gave birth to their first child, and the two have had two more since, choosing to keep them out of the spotlight.

Having been a part of the 2012 Academy Award Best Picture "Silver Linings Playbook," Stiles slowly but surely distanced herself from the early aughts teen rom-com star she used to be. Speaking to Elle in 2012, the actor gushed about her co-star Jennifer Lawrence, who also had a stunning style transformation. "She's really young, but she's so strong and formidable as an actress," Stiles shared. In the same interview, the actor also touched upon her body image, saying, "I always try to be healthy and maintain the best version of my body as I can. I try to steer away from comparing myself to other people, because then you can go crazy."

In a rapid-fire question interview with Marie Claire in 2016, Stiles shares "Patience, gratitude, curiosity" as the qualities that got her where she was and "Being unapologetic" as one thing every woman should try at least once. While Stiles continued rocking minimal makeup, the actor also embraced a more dramatic look for red carpets. Unlike it happened in the 2000s, Stiles was frequently seen rocking smoky eyes and having fun with a variety of different hairstyles in the late 2010s. Fashion-wise, Stiles stuck to her preference for patterned or embellished dresses, even throughout her first pregnancy.

2019-2025: Julia Stiles shared the beauty tips she learned in the industry

2019 was marked by the release of the crime-comedy "Hustlers," in which Julia Stiles starred alongside Jennifer Lopez. The film's success put the actor once again in the spotlight. At the time, Stiles admitted that fashion and beauty trends are the parts of her job she struggles with. "The focus on physical appearances is actually the hardest part of this job," she told Into the Gloss in the same year. "I definitely learn a lot from makeup artists. Then, being in different countries helps. What they sell in pharmacies and drugstores here in New York versus France or London is very different." Indeed, makeup has been one of the areas we've seen Stiles have fun in the most, as the actor stuck to shades of blond hair throughout the majority of her career.

Speaking of skincare, the actor admitted that she likes to change her routine depending on where she is. "For skincare, I gravitate towards more natural products," she said, adding, "I've also discovered that it's good to change things up, because climates change, and sometimes you need more moisture, sometimes you need more of something else." In 2019, Stiles shared that the resurgence of '90s fashion and beauty has been odd for her to witness, telling Allure, "Why are these trends coming back? I feel like I blocked out so much of the '90s." As Stiles continued to be in the spotlight, she remained loyal to her style, keeping her outfits simple and comfortable and sticking to looks she knows she likes.

2026-Present: Julia Stiles preaches using sunscreen as she competes on DWTS

It's hard to believe that Julia Stiles turned 45 in 2026, as the actor looks just as stunning as she did when we first got to know her. As a participant in Season 35 of the reality dancing competition "Dancing with the Stars," Stiles is being introduced to an entirely new audience, one that perhaps didn't have the privilege of growing up with her late '90s and early aughts work. Speaking to EW, Stiles shared that her dance partner Ezra Sosa is in charge of their looks, stating, "He's the boss, especially when it comes to fashion."

While the actor doesn't seem to have many regrets when it comes to her life, in an Instagram post, the star did share that not wearing sunscreen on a regular basis is something she wishes she could change about her past. "Note to my 20-year-old self: Always wear sunscreen. Why didn't you wear sunscreen? Why? Why were you sitting in the sun at peak hours of the day for so long," she said, adding, "There's this funny window of time when you're in your 30s — I should say me, when I was in my 30s, where I was like, 'Oh my god, the acne's gone, my skin is so clear.' And then, two seconds later, boom! Here come the wrinkles."

After more than two decades in the spotlight, Stiles has become known for authenticity — whether it comes to her work or her approach to fashion and beauty. The actor remained loyal to herself, embracing only the changes she liked. And with that, we're eager to see just how her stunning transformation continues.
