Few people possess the delicate balance of style and poise that Kate Middleton brings to her wardrobe. Even Pippa Middleton, who shares many of the royal's aesthetic qualities, has her own style journey that stands separate from her sister's. Although they started life together in rural Berkshire, England, their paths diverged when Kate married into the House of Windsor, and their individual approaches to fashion followed suit.
Don't get us wrong — Kate and Pippa still share sartorial similarities here and there. There's not even two full years between them, so it's not surprising that their wardrobes have been touched by the same generational trends. They both also started with the same foundations and even today might run in more similar circles than we think, socializing with the British upper crust and meeting the dress code expected there. The Middleton sisters have an equal appreciation for the finer labels, with Kate traditionally favoring the likes of Alexander McQueen, Emilia Wickstead, and Jenny Packham (just look at our favorite Kate Middleton wedding guest looks), while Pippa has rocked Chanel, Jimmy Choo, and Rolex. Both lean more tame and conservative in their silhouettes, but unlike the Princess of Wales, Pippa has the freedom to experiment with color, shape, trends, and even formality.
"While it's not especially trend-driven or experimental, consistency has become a defining feature of [Kate's] public image," "The Lady Di Look Book" author Eloise Moran explained to Harper's Bazaar, highlighting the key difference between the sisters' usual rotations. "In a way, it seems intentionally unadventurous — designed to reassure rather than express." The weight of the Crown means that Kate has to play it safer than Pippa to avoid rocking the boat as a public figure representing an institution with 1,000 years of tradition behind it.
Kate Middleton is bound by royal protocol, while Pippa has sartorial freedom
They share DNA, had the same upbringing, and in some ways lead similar lives in the extreme upper echelons of British society. But one fundamental difference between Kate and Pippa Middleton has also led to the biggest variance in their wardrobes. Kate's style adheres to royal protocol, while Pippa's doesn't. Even as both women evolve and experiment with their fashion, Kate's palace ties will always have the final say. As evidenced by Pippa Middleton's stunning style transformation, she's bound by no such rules.
Over the years, we've seen this manifest through the younger Middleton donning pieces that Kate could never, including short herms, lower-cut necklines, and gasp, bare legs without stockings! None of this is to say that Pippa has a risqué fashion sense, and her tastes actually appear to be quite conservative overall. But she does have clear sartorial freedoms that her sister doesn't. Back in September 2015, Pippa looked gorgeous in a blue gown with a cutout under the bust, while her earlier years as a bachelorette often saw her in shorter skirts than Kate typically wore as the high-profile girlfriend of the future king.
Royal tradition requires the Princess of Wales and other members of the royal family to avoid wearing black unless they're in a period of mourning, or at a designated somber event like Remembrance Day. Meanwhile, Pippa can and does rock all-black when she wants to. She's also stunned in midriff-baring vacation two-piece sets, as she did during a January 2020 vacation to St. Barts. It's possible Kate opts for similar choices on private vacations, but the glimpses we've seen still point to palace-approved garb not all that different from what she wears while on duty.
Pippa Middleton can take more fashion risks than her sister
There might not be anything officially written in the royal style rulebook about sticking to a safe and classic aesthetic, but that's the route that Kate Middleton has followed over the years. Timeless, polished rotations are tied closely to her public image and look phenomenal on her. Relatively, Pippa Middleton is more of a fashion risk-taker. When stacked up against A-listers in Hollywood and bold fashionistas who live for setting trends, her style is still safe and modest, but she does have the capacity to explore more than Kate.
"Kate and Pippa have a similar style but I feel Pippa is able to experiment more with shapes," celebrity fashion stylist Ellis Ranson told Express in 2023. "Pippa can play with trends more in comparison to Kate who can dip her toes in trends and really use [color] and classic cuts to showcase her style."
This difference manifests clearly in the prints and colors that the sisters wear. The younger Middleton a is a fan of busier patterns and bold, bright colors. Seriously, check out how Pippa Middleton breathed new life into outdated pink skinny jeans; she pulls off color blocking like a pro. On the other hand, Kate is a huge fan of refined monochrome. Even when breaking up that color, she sticks to similar or complementary palettes and still looks cohesive and intentional. When she does opt for a print, it's usually something classic and toned-down, such as fool-proof black-and-white gingham. Animal prints aren't a huge part of her repertoire, whereas Pippa can wear them more regularly. The princess does wear statement pieces occasionally, but she generally balances these with quiet neutrals to avoid having her wardrobe overshadow her work as a royal.
Kate Middleton keeps it formal, while Pippa's approach to fashion is more relaxed
Even beyond the Middleton sisters, a person's wardrobe is more often than not influenced by their lifestyle. As a working royal, Kate Middleton frequently dresses for public-facing official duties, so there's an inherent formality to her style. By comparison, Pippa Middleton is a private citizen who's a household name by association, so she not only has the freedom to defy royal dressing expectations, but she can also take a much more relaxed approach to styling herself.
As Eternal Goddess founder Molly Elizabeth Agnew shared with Express, "Both involved in the upper echelons of society with money to spend and appearance to upkeep, it's no real surprise that the pair [have] adopted a similar sartorial outlook. However, unsurprisingly, Pippa has the welcome ability to dress in a more casual manner more often than her royal older sibling."
Both Kate and Pippa love a breezy summer dress, but the difference is Pippa often styles hers with sneakers, and Kate typically does a wedge or heel. Pippa can also simply throw on a denim or leather jacket as her outerwear, but we're guessing Kate never just throws any kind of garment on. From the cohesion and refinement visible in every outfit she wears, it's clear that each piece is carefully calculated. Pippa is a fun summer set and espadrille kind of gal, while Kate's everyday wardrobe would look more at home in the corporate wear section, favoring tailored slacks, pencil skirts, and shift dresses. In a 2017 interview with BBC Radio 1, William, the Prince of Wales, admitted that he has "comfy clothes" that he wears at home, so it's possible that the princess dons more relaxed attire away from the public eye.
The sisters' accessories reflect the biggest differences in their approaches to style
The style differences between Kate and Pippa Middleton are most obvious in the smaller elements of each look: their accessories and beauty choices. Again, Pippa's aesthetic is more fun, casual, and trend-forward, while even the finest details of Kate's outfits have to meet the royal brief. Take their sunglasses, for example. Kate still regularly dons this summer mainstay, but she typically reaches for classic silhouettes, such as the ever-popular rectangle. But Pippa can afford to be more creative and trendy with her choice of shades, notably going for a chic pair of round Ray-Bans for a visit to Wimbledon in 2019.
Fans will notice the same thing with their handbags, hats, and other trimmings. There's nothing stopping Pippa from complementing her outfit with a bold coral crossbody or a laid-back cap. Comparatively, Kate Middleton's favorite bags are classic and understated with an old-money feel. Her headpieces may be maximalist in nature, but from the tiaras she stuns in to her vast array of hats and fascinators, every one is palace-coded. Then there's the hair. Kate Middleton is known for her sleek bouncy blowout, but she also likes updos — they're just always polished and perfect. On the other hand, Pippa goes for braids and less elaborate 'dos.
Then there are the accessories Kate wears which are missing from Pippa's looks altogether. The Princess of Wales is first and foremost a public figure when she's on duty in an official capacity, so she more often than not rocks brooches, pins, and other symbols of the charities, organizations, and causes she supports. While attending the same tennis championships, Kate has frequently worn the Committee bow, signifying her affiliation with the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club.
The Middleton sisters still share style similarities, too
From the moment Kate Middleton became a member of the royal family upon her fairytale wedding in April 2011, her style was always going to gravitate in a different direction than her sister Pippa's. But for all their differences, the Middleton sisters still share plenty of similarities, so much so that there are times when you have to do a double take to confirm which sister you're looking at. Kate married into royalty, but Pippa married billionaire hedge fund manager James Matthews, meaning that while their restrictions are different, their budgets aren't. Both Pippa and Kate have a healthy collection of high-end garments and accessories from the most exclusive brands, even if their particular styles differ.
"Pippa and Kate follow a similar fashion format which works equally well for both of the sisters," style expert Miranda Holder told Express. "Both of them [favor] figure-flattering monochromatic looks, both sisters understand the transformative power of sharp tailoring and a nude, leg-lengthening shoe, and both Kate and Pippa keep their accessories discreet and classy. The two sisters are very alike indeed in their tastes and both look their best in very similar garments."
The sisters are probably quite beyond sharing clothes, but there have been many outfits over the years that could have fooled us. Both have been spotted in the timeless combo of neutral pants and classic striped sweaters, both love black-and-white dresses, and they look equally good in floor-length black-tie gowns. In the cooler weather, the sisters look the part in sophisticated winter coats and boots, both standing out in jewel tones. Then there were their wedding dresses; Kate went for conservative long sleeves while Pippa donned short, but both wore timeless lace. The proof is in the wardrobe: When there's a sisterly bond, not even royalty can truly break it up.
