The Inappropriate Miley Cyrus Look That Led To An Epic Wardrobe Malfunction
Daring looks, whether they're on the street or the stage, are part of the Miley Cyrus brand. But one of the singer's looks, in particular, led to an epic wardrobe malfunction and landed on the list of Miley Cyrus' inappropriate outfits that we'll never forget. On-stage fashion fails are nothing new — even Taylor Swift had some outfit mishaps on the Eras Tour — but this one will go down in wardrobe-malfunction history. So, what happened?
In 2021, Miley Cyrus hosted a New Year's Eve concert that was airing on broadcast television (NBC), so there was definitely a family-friendly parameter on the show. As she performed her hit "Party in the USA," Cyrus' silver, shredded-looking shirt, which was barely there to begin with, started to fall off. As she held a microphone in one hand, she held the shirt over her chest with the other. She visibly tried to remedy the situation as she continued singing, but quickly realized it was a lost cause. She dashed off stage while her backup singers and the enthusiastic audience took over the lyrics. In less than a minute, she was back on stage, picking up where she left off.
How Miley Cyrus recovered when her top wouldn't
Miley Cyrus flexed her professional chops when she was hit with the epic wardrobe malfunction on live TV. After she dashed off-stage, she re-emerged in a red oversized blazer with nothing underneath and finished the song. (Here are some tips for wearing an oversized blazer in the summer, in case you want to channel Cyrus' look intentionally.)
The best part of the whole incident was her reaction. Like a number of celebs who have owned their red-carpet outfit malfunctions, the "Flowers" singer joked about the incident while she performed, quipping that the look qualified as "the most clothes that I've ever worn on stage." As she wrapped up the concert, she acknowledged to the crowd, "Tonight's show was all about being flexible, rolling with the punches, and making the best out of even the worst circumstances." And obviously there was no detrimental effect for Cyrus, as she was invited back to host the event again the following year.
