The Big Fashion Myth Redheads Should Just Ignore

Having the rarest natural hair color in the world, redheads tend to be slammed with more rules than the rest of us. Whether it's beauty trends considered out of style for redheads or makeup looks that supposedly don't match crimson locks, the guidelines can definitely pile up. But according to Katie Schuppler, founder of KS Style Consulting, there's one particularly constricting rule that redheads can completely forget about, and that's a ban from wearing pink clothes.

The alleged logic behind this advice is that pink and red cause too much contrast, so those with any shade of red hair would end up clashing with any pink outfit they wore. While there's some accuracy in the fact that certain colors don't complement others, that's true for any hair color, and redheads "absolutely can" wear pink, Schuppler says, as long as they consider specific tones. "A saturated bubblegum pink or a fuchsia tone work best for contrast while still having that pop of color," she notes exclusively to Glam.

When it comes to deciding exactly which shade of pink suits your particular tone of red, Schuppler advises actively going for a contrast rather than trying to match your tresses to your 'fit: "For lighter red hair, a fuchsia pink works best since it's darker in color, and for darker red hair the bubblegum tone is best to contrast against the darker color." While paying attention to shades and tones is your best bet for pulling off a pink look with red hair, you can also complete your palette with some intentional hair accessories.

Hair accessories can tie red hair and pink clothes together

Just so we're clear, there's nothing to stop redheads from wearing pink as long as they consider how the tone of pink in their clothes works with their shade of red hair. But to really land the final look, you could always add a hair accessory. "A darker color headband is a perfect complement, and since head scarves are so on trend right now, a darker head scarf or something in a contrasting print would complement red hair well," suggests Katie Schuppler in an exclusive chat with Glam. One of the best ways to effortlessly style a chic silk scarf is to wear it on your head, either as a folded scarf covering most of the hair or as a thinner headband. Just ensure you choose a dark hue to add a new dynamic to your red hair, and you'll elevate your look with a hint of glamour.

To create a more feminine vibe, you could reach for an embellished headband, such as the TERSE Black Velvet Headband, which has metallic accents. If you're leaning more toward a head scarf, something like the Woogwin Satin Scarf comes in several shades, including plain black and leopard-print, and at 35 inches, you can fold it however you like to create your ideal look. Otherwise, the MissShorthair 50s Chiffon Scarf is a more sheer and thinner option for an even more versatile styling session.

If you think you look weird in headbands, just try the TikTok-viral hack, which involves tying your front pieces to the back pieces of hair and flipping a layer of hair over them to hide the evidence. This will ensure your crimson tresses stay in place and look super full as your headband or scarf serves as the cherry on top of your look.
