Celebrity Smile Transformations That Were Hard To Miss
In the world of the rich and famous, there's nothing you can't buy — including the perfect smile. Veneers, composite bonding, and teeth whitening have been a regular procedure in the entertainment industry for a while now, and some celebrity teeth transformations are just impossible to ignore. "The most common cosmetic procedure among celebrities is a smile enhancement using porcelain veneers," Dr. Dani B., a cosmetic and reconstructive dentist in Los Angeles, shares exclusively with Glam. "The procedure allows us to refine the color, shape, size, mask old dental work and alignment of the teeth, creating a natural yet noticeably elevated smile," he adds.
Of course, just because they have access to the crème de la crème of the dentist industry, that doesn't necessarily mean that every single celebrity smile transformation has been a win. In fact, most of Hollywood seems to have the exact same set of teeth now, and well ... getting rid of their original smile can sometimes also get rid of a signature look they had. Also, there are things you should know before getting veneers, as making this move is a permanent decision. Nevertheless, Hollywood seems to be obsessed with the more symmetrical and white smile, and these ladies have done a lot to achieve it!
Miley Cyrus' new veneers have been the talk of the internet
Miley Cyrus' teeth have been a topic of debate among her fans over the past couple of years, with many stating they don't suit the singer. Comparing her current teeth to the teeth she had when we first got to know and love her as Hannah Montana, there's no denying that a lot of work has been done. "Miley has likely had gum contouring (crown lengthening) to improve her gummy smile and even out the gum line," Dr. Raj Juneja explained to Hello!. "A gum lift is a surgical procedure aimed at surgically addressing gum-related issues," Dr. Thuha Jabbar added. Apart from a gum lift, Dr. Juneja clarifies that Cyrus had "marked crowding (overlapping of her front teeth)" and that it has been fixed, most likely with some type of braces or aligners.
However, it is also clear that the popstar has had veneers done since. "It appears that Miley has chosen veneers, evident from the veneers' distinctive shape and polished appearance," Dr. Jabbar went on. And while veneers are a great way to get symmetrical and pretty teeth, it's also no secret that when they're super noticeable, they are generally poorly done. Many fans have voiced their opinions on the star's new look, with one Redditor even saying, "With those teeth, I don't think she CAN close her mouth." Of course, the former Disney star is known for bold changes, so the veneers aren't a surprise — Miley Cyrus' eyebrow transformation over the years is just as dramatic.
Kylie Jenner's smile transformation since her tweens is impossible to ignore
With celebrity cosmetic dentist Dr. Michael Apa doing her teeth, it's no surprise that Kylie Jenner's smile transformation has been impressive. According to Dr. Haris Stratakis, Jenner's teeth used to be "gappy, crooked, and short" before she became famous, and "she transformed her teeth with three cosmetic treatments: braces/aligners, whitening, and veneers" (via Instagram). Looking at Jenner's teeth when "Keeping Up with the Kardashians" premiered, it's clear that the makeup mogul has whiter and more symmetrical teeth today — most likely thanks to expertly done veneers. Of course, as one of the celebs who look totally different without fillers, it's not surprising that Jenner committed to this change.
"Veneers are surprisingly low-maintenance when it comes to recovery," Dr. Dani B. tells us exclusively. "There's minimal to no downtime — most of my patients return to their routine (and even film sets) the next day." This, of course, makes veneers a great option for someone as famous as Kylie Jenner, who undoubtedly has a busy work schedule.
Millie Bobby Brown's teeth have changed a lot over the years
A lot of the celebrities on our list rose to fame as children, and their teeth hadn't fully grown or aligned yet when they came into the spotlight. One of them is "Stranger Things" star Millie Bobby Brown, whose original teeth look nothing like the ones she has today. In 2020, when she was only 16, the Netflix star got her smile completely transformed.
"It looks like she has had Invisalign, or some kind of straightening, as well as teeth whitening," Dr. Richard Marques revealed to Daily Mail. "It also looks as though she has had two porcelain veneers or composite bonding to improve the two lateral teeth (adjacent to the front teeth)." Apart from the change in the appearance of her teeth, the actor has grown up in front of our eyes, changing everything from her hair to her wardrobe in the process.
Demi Lovato got rid of the gap between her teeth (and regrets it)
It's no secret that there are downsides of the trendy veneers, and one of them is definitely the fact that having unique teeth is rare. Of course, the priority is always that the teeth are healthy, but sometimes, a gap between the front two teeth is a way to distinguish yourself from the crowd. Recently, we've seen fans across the globe praise Aimee Lou Wood of "White Lotus" fame for keeping her teeth the way they are. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for former Disney star Demi Lovato.
Before her big break, Lovato had an adorable gap between her front teeth. However, she admitted that she was advised to get rid of it, even citing the experience as the "worst beauty advice" she had ever received. "I signed with Disney Channel when I got 'Camp Rock,' and I had a gap between my two front teeth," Lovato told Allure in 2016. "They were like, 'Would you be willing to fix it?' I wish today that I hadn't, because my gap was really cute." And while the musician's teeth look perfectly in line and pearly white today, we do appreciate that the star has shared her regret, acknowledging that beauty comes in a variety of ways.
Chrissy Teigen got veneers because she's a 'teeth-grinder'
By now, it's clear that plenty of celebrities who already have great smiles still end up getting veneers. And if you ask us, one of them is definitely model Chrissy Teigen. The star already had great teeth; however, in 2016, she admitted that she had gotten veneers, revealing that it was one of the strangest beauty procedures she had undergone.
"I shaved away my teeth and made them into little pencil points for nice teeth, that's kind of weird if you think about it," Teigen admitted to Harper's Bazaar that year. "I was a notorious teeth-grinder, so all my front teeth became a couple millimeters shorter." Of course, for the rich and famous, getting a full set of new teeth is no big deal, no matter how much they cost. "The cost of veneers varies depending on the dentist's expertise, the materials used, and the complexity of the case," Dr. Dani B. tells us exclusively. "In Los Angeles, you can expect to invest $2,000 to $4,000 per tooth for high-quality, custom-designed porcelain veneers."
Jordyn Woods closed her teeth gap even though she said she wouldn't
Demi Lovato isn't the only celebrity who ended up saying goodbye to their gap teeth. Those who remember model Jordyn Woods' original teeth know that the star used to have a gap between her front two teeth — one that certainly was a charming part of her look. In fact, Woods went as far as to publicly embrace the gap, writing on Instagram in 2017, "... often people have the nerve to say fix your teeth ... for your information — no I will not fix my gap to blend in with the rest of society! My gap makes me who I am." However, it seems as if she has changed her mind since then, as the gap is gone.
In 2019, the model revealed to Refinery29 why she opted to get it closed. "I never disliked my smile or anything — I wanted to try something new and I found the doctor that I trusted," she said. "It may take a second for people to get used to it, but life is about evolving. It was a bittersweet thing. I wouldn't say it's better or anything — it's just the new version of me."
Lindsay Lohan swapped her chipped and stained teeth for a new set of pearly whites
Lindsay Lohan has undergone quite a few transformations over the years, and her teeth definitely played a role in her most recent one. While we're all scratching our heads wondering how Lohan looks better (and younger) than ever, we can't help but acknowledge just how much her teeth have changed since the early 2010s, when they looked chipped and stained. "Ms. Lohan is a beautiful young lady but her smile indicates some health problems," Dr. Arthur Glosman told E! News in 2011. "It looks as though she has yellow stained teeth, that are chipped at the edges, and possible tooth decay, which could be caused by lack of oral good hygiene, drinking too much coffee, tea, soda and smoking." Luckily, Lohan's teeth look much healthier today, most likely thanks to extensive dental work and veneers.
"A beautiful smile doesn't just photograph well — it impacts how people feel," Dr. Dani B. explains to us exclusively. And in Lohan's case, she certainly seems a lot happier with her new look. "In my experience, patients who complete their smile transformation carry themselves with more confidence, ease, and self-assurance," the expert adds. "When you feel good about your smile, it shows — and that's something everyone, celebrity or not, deserves to experience."
Scarlett Johansson's teeth went from natural looking to a classic Hollywood smile
Hollywood star Scarlett Johansson's teeth changed drastically over the years. Throughout most of her career, any enhancements she had done to her teeth were likely thanks to alignment methods and whitening. "It's possible that they did a little gum trimming and just shaved down the edge ..." Dr. Sara Hahn explained in a TikTok, looking at photos of Scarlett Johansson from the 2000s and 2010s.
However, more recent images of the actor indicate that she had veneers done. "The color is definitely more white, the shape is a lot more even, the canines are the same white, and that's never naturally occurring — and it looks like she had the premolars done as well," Dr. Hahn went on. Johansson's smile today is definitely more in line with the beauty standards and expectations that Hollywood sets for women in the industry. Is that a good thing? Difficult to answer. While we adore seeing her as confident as ever, we also can't help but hate the idea of everybody having the exact same teeth.
Victoria Beckham's teeth used to be slanted inward, but veneers fixed that
When Victoria Beckham rose to fame with the Spice Girls in the mid-1990s, her teeth were definitely not horrible. In fact, a normal person would have to do a double-take to even notice that anything was slightly off with them. However, dentists would immediately notice the position of her teeth. "[In an earlier photo] Victoria has what we call a 'deep bite' [which] is when your top teeth overlap your bottom teeth more than what is considered to be the usual," Dr. Rhona Eskander explained on TikTok. "Also, her teeth are retroclined, [which] means they're literally slanted inwards."
Since then, Beckham's smile has changed, and the slanted smile is history. "She appears to have had ceramic veneers on her upper 10 and likely lower 10 teeth, to improve alignment, width and color of her smile," Dr. Sahil Patel told Hello!. "The tipping of her teeth is still not fully corrected, but the ceramic has been designed in a way to balance her smile width so that she achieves a 'straight-looking' smile even if the teeth are not in ideal positions." Of course, this subtle change perfectly accompanied Victoria Beckham's stunning style transformation. While it's no secret that Victoria Beckham doesn't like to smile in photos as she feels uncomfortable getting photographed, there's no denying that her smile (before and after) is beautiful.
Nicole Kidman swapped her gummy smile for a dramatically white one
Hollywood star Nicole Kidman always had a beautiful smile, even though her gums were visible. "Looking at the earlier pictures of Nicole, we can see that her top gums are visibly noticeable, which can cause the teeth to appear smaller," Dr. Sam Jethwa explained to Hello!. "This suggests that she has undergone a dental procedure called gum contouring to address the extra gum tissue, however not alone, the shapes of the teeth have been improved to match."
While Kidman probably underwent gum contouring — judging from the fact that her gums aren't visible while smiling anymore — she may have done even more to her teeth. "Veneers may be necessary to create a more even smile, which is what I believe Nicole Kidman has had. It appears that Nicole's top eight teeth have been improved with ultra-thin porcelain veneer treatment," Dr. Jethwa added. While the "Practical Magic" star probably paid quite a bit of money to achieve a perfectly symmetrical smile, we can't help but notice just how overly white her teeth are now, which is definitely an instant giveaway of veneers. Of course, considering that Nicole Kidman's face has transformed over the years, the change in her teeth is the least surprising one.
Blake Lively's teeth changed, and veneers are the most likely reason
Actor Blake Lively has been in the spotlight for over 15 years, since her big break as Serena van der Woodsen on 2007's "Gossip Girl." However, looking back on her career, there is no denying that Lively has undergone a stunning style transformation. While the star's fashion choices changed over the years, so did her appearance. And when comparing photos of Lively from the beginning of her career and now, the change in her smile is undeniable.
"While never officially confirmed, Blake Lively's smile transformation strongly suggests she has veneers," Dr. Emily Parker explained (via Braces Diary), citing proof such as "changes in tooth shape, a brighter shade, and gum reshaping." In particular, some of the "It Ends with Us" star's teeth look more even in size now than before, which is usually either achieved through veneers or composite bonding.
Emma Watson's teeth are a lot whiter and more uniform today
Whether you loved her as Hermione Granger or you prefer some of her more recent work, there's no denying that Emma Watson has always been stunning. As a teenager, Watson wore braces to align her teeth, but her smile looks much whiter and her teeth look a bit more square today, which is a giveaway that her teeth aren't all natural anymore. "It's a mix of expert care and small, strategic tweaks anyone can try," Dr. Shaikho Khalaf wrote on his Instagram. "Professional whitening gave her that bright, camera-ready glow — perfect for red carpets," he explained in the caption. "For minor imperfections or gaps, veneers or bonding likely added symmetry and polish."
Since she's one of the famous women who are unapologetic about their body hair, we have to admit that we're a tad surprised the "Harry Potter" star decided to change the shape of her teeth that much. However, there is no denying that her new smile has been done with care, ensuring the end result suits her perfectly.
