Without even realizing it, hair can be such a numbers game: Washing our hair every two days, getting a trim every eight weeks, doing highlights every three months, leaving a hair mask on for however long you should, and getting a blowout so it will last five days. Well, that's what we want with that last one, anyway. If we're going to part with our hard-earned cash and time for a salon blowout, we definitely want it to go the distance so we can have our tresses looking their best for more than a day or two.

Luckily, this is doable with a few tips. Master celebrity stylist Stephanie Angelone from RPZL Hair Extension & Blowout Bar in New York City says that a blowout should last at least three days, "but some women can get up to a week" out of it. Interestingly, though perhaps unsurprisingly, your hair type plays a big role in how long it'll last. "Everyone's different depending on your hair texture, length, density, and scalp oils," Angelone exclusively tells Glam. "The thicker the hair, the longer the blowout will last. Women with finer or thin hair may only get up to a couple days due to oils from the scalp." Regardless of hair type, there are a few universal helpers — from products to things to avoid — that can help all of us extend the numbers when it comes to a blowout.

Top tips for extending your salon blowout

The first step in extending the life of your blowout is to wash your hair before the appointment with a clarifying shampoo to help remove excess scalp oils for a clean canvas. (Here are our picks for the five best clarifying shampoos when you need to give your hair a reset.) At the salon, Stephanie Angelone says to "ask your stylist for a voluminous blowout with just the blow dryer." This ensures the roots stay elevated for longer.

Furthermore, remember that water and heat are your blowout's enemy. When you wash your face, pull your hair back into a loose ponytail using a satin scrunchie and wear a headband like the Whaline Terrycloth Headband at the hairline to avoid getting cleanser or water on your locks. When you shower, tie your hair into a bun, and wear a shower cap that fully covers it, like the Mikimini Shower Cap. "And always sleep with your hair up," Angelone exclusively advises Glam. "If you're trying to preserve your blowout, a satin scrunchie like RPZL Slouchy Scrunchie works amazingly." Sleeping on a satin pillowcase, like the Kitsch Satin Pillowcase with Zipper, also ensures hair doesn't tangle throughout the night.

Over the following days, you might need to carefully do a few touch-ups on the blowout. "Be mindful that overheating your hair can result in it getting stringy or fall flat," explains Angelone. Instead, use a round brush and hair dryer on the cold setting if any areas need a little love.

Products that help extend a blowout

Stephanie Angelone recommends a couple products to help your salon blowouts last longer. "You can touch up daily by using dry shampoo and dry conditioner," she exclusively shares with Glam. Just make sure you know how to use dry shampoo the right way to keep your hair healthy and not waste any precious product. If you're looking for a standout option, the Bumble and bumble Prêt-à-Powder Invisible Dry Shampoo comes highly rated.

If you're wondering how a dry conditioner is different from a dry shampoo, it acts like a conditioner by hydrating the ends of the hair without having to step foot in the shower. Meanwhile, if your tresses have lost their oomph, Angelone says, "You can combat flatness with RPZL Volumizing Powder applied at the roots on dry hair for lasting hold."
