Liza Minnelli's Style Evolution Throughout Her Storied Career

Liza Minnelli was destined to be an icon. When your mother is actor-singer, Judy Garland, and your father is director of stage and screen, Vincent Minnelli, not getting involved in the family business probably doesn't feel like much of an option. "It's like growing up in a coal mining town," Minnelli told Larry King on "Larry King Live" in October 2010. "Everybody does what everybody else does."

But when trying to avoid the nepo-baby label, you need to come up with your own sense of style to escape always being compared to your famous parents. Minnelli did that in befriending one of the biggest fashion designers of the '60s and '70s: Halston. "You know, he really gave me a look," Minnelli said of Halston on "The Today Show" in April 2013. "I think my biggest talent is not my own, but I think it's recognizing the most talented people ... and he was the one. He changed everything in fashion." Minnelli was only 20 when she met Halston, but from that moment forward, the two were inseparable. "I never did a show or went to a party — or threw one — without him guiding me ... In him there was tastefulness, style, and simplicity," Minnelli told WWD in 1990.

While Minnelli gives Halston all the credit for her style evolution, she certainly had a say along the way. From her early days dressing like her mom to being the sequin queen of the dance floor at Studio 54, Minnelli has evolved in ways that very few can.

Liza Minnelli dressed conservatively when performing with her mother Judy Garland

Like a lot of celebrities in the 1960s, Judy Garland had a variety show called "The Judy Garland Show." Despite guest appearances from big name celebrities like Frank Sinatra and Ethel Merman, the series lasted only one season. However, during that time Liza Minnelli was an occasional guest, and she and her mom would both sing and act together. In 1963, when this photo was taken, Minnelli was only 17 and very much under her mother's wing, especially in terms of fashion and style. Even back then, the hairstyle Minnelli is sporting is dated and a bit frumpy.

Liza Minnelli starts to find her own look

Around the mid-1960s, Liza Minnelli started to find her own sense of style. In doing so, she embraced the super-short pixie cut of the decade that was originally made famous by Mia Farrow in 1968's "Rosemary's Baby." Not only is this picture from 1965 serving up all the inspo you need to rock a pixie cut, but it shows that Minnelli is ready to experiment with a different look, one that's a major leap in the opposite direction of her mom's take on fashion. At this point, she was ready to have more control over how the world sees her.

Liza Minnelli's 1967 wedding dress feels out of place

When it comes to unconventional celebrity wedding dresses that left a mark on us, this one that Liza Minnelli wore in 1967 when she married Peter Allen is definitely on the list. Although the Victorian-inspired look is interesting, it's an odd choice for a 21 year old in the late 1960s. Granted, at this time, Minnelli had only just met her style guru Halston, so perhaps she wasn't yet close enough to the designer to get his opinions on her wedding dress. By this point, she'd simply not yet been made into everything she was going to stylistically be.

Liza Minnelli entering her sequin era

As the 1960s ended, the '70s ushered in glamour and glitz that came in the form of sequins and other sparkly embellishments. Liza Minnelli, as both a film and stage performer, embraced the shimmer trend of the time — a style that would come to dominate her wardrobe for the rest of her career. At the premiere of Liza Minnelli at Olympia in Paris in December 1969, Minnelli wore these fantastic sequin pinstripe pants, a white halter top, and a large black bow at the neck of the top, setting the stage for similar looks to follow.

Liza Minnelli paying homage to Sally Bowles

Although Liza Minnelli has played many roles, she's perhaps most well known for playing Sally Bowles in 1972's "Cabaret," a performance that got the singer-actor her first and only Oscar. Because Sally Bowles was career defining for Minnelli, she paid tribute to the character at the "Battle of Versailles" fashion show and charity ball in November 1973. Minnelli wore a blazer with nothing underneath, and paired it with a large black bow and bowler hat — all of which were covered in black sequins.

Liza Minnelli rocking lots of rhinestones at Studio 54

First, let's take a moment to note how iconic this photo from 1977 is. Liza Minnelli is sharing the couch with not just her bestie Halson, but Elizabeth Taylor (in blue) and Betty Ford (in peach) as well — and at the notorious Studio 54, no less. Minnelli's sheer violet jumpsuit covered in rows and rows of rhinestones, was just as sparkly and embellished as the other women in the shot, and given that they were at an honorary event for Halston, it's very possible that all three women were wearing his designs. After all, who would go to Studio 54 in the late '70s in anything but Halston?

Liza Minnelli proving sequins are an everyday look

On a random evening in August 1983, Liza Minnelli was photographed wearing this white and black sequined pantsuit and matching jacket. While many of Minnelli's sequin looks seem most appropriate for elaborate celebrations or performances, this particular design is proof that sequins can be rocked as everyday glam. For Minnelli, who completed her outfit with a black choker necklace with a large silver cross, this is a pretty tame outfit. Although we're not sure where she was going, we do know she was one of the best dressed in whatever room she was in.

Liza Minnelli dolled up for her own event

In 1991, Liza Minnelli appeared in 15-show run of "Liza: Stepping Out at Radio City", where she sang all of her big hits. After one of her performances, Minnelli was photographed holding hands with actor Joe Pesci while wearing a black catsuit with a plunging sweetheart neckline and an oversized turquoise sequin jacket with large, billowy sleeves. As had been the case since the mid-1960s, the singer rocked her usual pixie cut, which was totally on trend in the '90s.

Liza Minnelli left the sequins at home for the 1997 Grammy Awards

When Liza Minnelli attended the 1997 Grammy Awards, she shockingly didn't wear any sequins — not a single one. Instead, the star donned black silk pants and long, black tunic-style dress with a slit up the front. She completed her outfit with black heels and a very large, over-the-top black boa, because that's just the kind of woman Minnelli is. With her pixie cut slicked back and rocking a bold lip, Minnelli looked phenomenal and, of course, ready to party.

Liza Minnelli showcasing that she's still got it

Although we don't see Liza Minnelli out and about the way we used to, when she does make public appearances, she still brings the glam. In 2010, Minnelli attended the premiere of "Sex and the City 2" at Radio City Music Hall wearing this two-piece shimmery, sheer outfit with matching heels and a scarf pulled tightly around her neck to look like a choker. Minnelli's timeless pixie cut was given a spiky look for the occasion and, as usual, she seemed right at home on the red carpet.

The singer has settled into a comfortable style nook, and she hasn't really evolved her look much since 2010. However, her signature style is absolutely fit for a diva, and after turning 80 in March 2026, Minnelli is still looking fabulous.
