These Millennial Trends Are Hot In August 2026 & They're Actually Nostalgic For Boomers, Too

We all know that trends are cyclical — everything we wear today can trace its roots to decades past (whether we realize it or not). Fashion experts have posited that the 2020s are the decade of nostalgia, with many of the "newest" trends being derived from fashion trends of the early aughts and '90s. Of course, nostalgia in the trend cycle is nothing new: Many of those revived '90s trends actually originated from the 1970s. The fun, dynamic spirit that encapsulated fashion throughout the '70s has been mimicked time and time again. Think of the biggest millennial trends: platform sandals, wide-legged jeans, and metallics — all '70s staples. 

Now, August 2026 is seeing a renaissance of '90s millennial style. Slinky satin slips, funky embellished jeans, and sensible leather shoes are just a few of late summer's biggest trends, and they all emerged in the '90s as updated takes on '70s style. And instead of being derivative, the 2026 versions of these retro trends have managed to give them a distinctly 2020s spin.

Satin typically trends in fall, but we're rocking it early in 2026. As we transition into the last month of summer, one of the largest continuing trends are glossy slip dresses. Satin slips are widely considered to be a revival of the 1990s casual dress style that dominated red carpets, but they actually draw their origins from two decades earlier. In the 1970s, satin slip dresses were one of the largest nightlife fashion trends. Sheer, shiny materials like satin and lamé were incorporated into stylish evening attire, like the maxi dresses that pervaded disco culture. 

Celebs like Bianca Jagger and Diana Ross helped bring the humble slip dress into evening wear, whether in a more classic fashion like Ross or incorporated into risqué Studio 54 ensembles like Jagger. The '90s updated the satin slip by streamlining the cut into a simple tank style, as well as opting for neutral colors, though moody shades like burgundy and purple were worn as grungier takes on the classic. Supermodel Kate Moss was the queen of '90s slip dresses; she was often spotted wearing simple, shapeless satin maxi dresses that perfectly encapsulated the decade's minimalist approach to fashion.

For summer 2026, satin slip dresses are trending in multiple different styles, so there's one for every occasion. We're seeing a mix of mini and maxi slips this season; short, lace-trimmed nighties are being made daytime-appropriate with the addition of simple denim or leather jackets, and sleek maxi dresses pair beautifully with equally on-trend heeled thong sandals. With so many options, the late-summer satin dress revival is perfect for nostalgic millennials and boomers alike. 

Styling silk scarves to keep yourself warm in colder weather is a breeze, but we're actually seeing the perennial headwear staple come back into fashion in the summer this year. Silk bandanas were one of the most popular summertime accessories in the '90s, as chic scarves in muted colors provided an effortless, just-came-from-the-beach vibe that celebs and everyday women alike adored. 

Of course, women in the '70s also employed the use of headscarves, albeit in a more distinctly bohemian fashion. Jackie Kennedy famously popularized the use of silk scarves and more casual kerchiefs in the day-to-day style of the '60s and '70s. The former first lady had a then-unmatched influence over women's fashion, and her stylish head scarves quickly caught on worldwide. The silk and cotton headscarves of the '70s were typically longer than those worn in the '90s, and they often featured earthy tones and classic patterns like paisley. 

On the other hand, '90s supermodels like Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, and Cindy Crawford wore silk scarves on and off the runway. What's more, the models switched it up from time to time by tying them loosely around their necks. This more modern approach also involved bold patterns and bright colors, a far cry from the toned-down shades of '70s scarves. In summer 2026, we're seeing a revival of the silk bandana that blends the most popular variations of '70s and '90s headscarves. Neutral-colored scarves lined in lace, lengthy scarves that drape over the shoulder, and those with bohemian patterns are among the styles we're seeing the most this season. 

Embellished jeans are one of the most whimsical denim trends of the late summer. Unlike the most outdated denim trends of 2026, embellished jeans are a fun, timeless take on trousers for women of all ages. This summer, we're seeing these jeans return to the mainstream in a variety of unique styles, with the embellishments ranging from small, sparkling rhinestones to floral and lace detailing and large brooches that cover the entire front and back of the pants. 

Like the other summer 2026 trends on this list, embellished jeans have roots in both the '70s and '90s. Quite opposite from the glitzy, rhinestone-decorated jeans that dominated red carpets throughout the '90s, the '70s take on the trend is more bohemian (sensing a pattern?). In the 1970s, one denim fad involved floral or lacy appliqués being stitched onto denim pants and jackets. Rockstars like Janis Joplin influenced youth of the era to embroider, stud, and patch up their denim as a means of self-expression. This DIY effect allowed young boomers to easily give their wardrobe a bohemian upgrade. Embellished and embroidered jeans today have been beloved by boomers and millennials for years, and will now be appreciated by Gen Z. 

Shimmering nail polish colors have been on-trend for a few years now, though how exactly the reflective effect is achieved has changed. In 2023, pearlescent nails dominated the scene, and the clean-girl trend of 2024 and 2025 brought sheer, milky glitter to the forefront. Now, in summer 2026, we're going back to chrome. But unlike the silver chrome of the early 2020s, this season is all about gold. For the boomers and millennials, this is nothing revolutionary. 

Futuristic manicures were all the rage in the '90s, with nails often featuring a gold or silver metallic finish that helped to transition the era into cyber-inspired Y2K futurism. Pop stars like Britney Spears and Madonna went all in on this trend, often rocking silver and gold chrome manis onstage. Just two decades prior, acrylic nails emerged as a big beauty trend, and many who indulged in this manicure dialed up the glamour with gold metallic nail polish or decals. 

In the 1970s, male glam rockers like David Bowie and Steven Tyler helped popularize metallic and bold polish as a means of subversion, which later broke into the mainstream for women. Metallic nails became an alternative to the natural-looking polish that was popular at the beginning and middle of the decade. Now, gilded manicures have gotten a summer 2026 update. Nail techs are utilizing gold chrome for 3D designs, unique French tips, and dainty painted designs. 

You can't go wrong with a high-quality pair of leather shoes. They'll last forever and mold themselves to your feet perfectly over time — what's not to love? As summer 2026 winds down, we're seeing women employ leather loafers and modest pumps as a comfortable, European-inspired fashion statement. While the material may sound too heavy for warm weather, leather is trending for the summer once more, and, yes, you can wear it without overheating. This is something women of the '70s and '90s understood well. 

In the '90s, many wore soft leather loafers with jeans, which slightly elevated the trousers' casual material. Carolyn Bessette was the decade's go-to celebrity for chic streetwear inspiration, which often included straight-leg blue jeans and a sensible pair of brown loafers. But, when you think of '70s footwear, leather flats may not come to mind first (given that the era is now most closely associated with disco shoes like platform heels and heeled boots). However, stylish yet practical shoes were on-trend for women in their day-to-day lives — think Mary Janes, round-toe boots, and, of course, leather loafers.

Fast-forward to today, and leather shoes are perfect for August 2026, anchoring the transition period between summer and fall.
