The Zodiac Signs Ranked From Most To Least Serious

Some people always seem laser-focused and serious about the things they put their minds to. On the other end of the spectrum, some folks seem to never want to grow up. This especially rings true when it comes to the signs of the zodiac, as there are some that are more serious, while others don't ever take life seriously.

There's a chance that the element your sign falls under could have something to do with how serious you are. Earth signs all tend to rank high on the seriousness scale because they are grounded and focused. Water signs are lower on the list (except for Scorpio — more on that soon) because they tend to mirror the people they spend most of their time with and are more apt to go with the flow.

Fire signs have energy and a lust for life, but that can really put them anywhere on the scale of seriousness. And air signs tend to be more social, making them less serious. Want to know more? Let's take a look at the most to least-serious zodiac signs and what makes them that way!

Work-focused Capricorn

If your birthdate falls between December 22 and January 19, you are a Capricorn. Of course, finding this sign in other parts of your birth chart can give you some of the traits of this sea goat as well. Capricorns are known as the workaholics of the zodiac, always focused on the job and striving toward success. They like to stay busy, which makes them very single-track-minded.

This can make them an awfully serious bunch who often forgets to take time out to have fun, which is why they're first on this list. Being a Cardinal sign adds to Capricorn's need to stay in serious mode even when they're not on the clock and should be taking some time out for themselves. They are action-oriented.

On top of that, Capricorn is one of the two signs ruled by Saturn, which pushes them even more into being hard at work more often than not. Rather than being so hard on yourself all the time, Capricorn, take some time out once a week to have some fun — whether that means playing your favorite video game or going out for a night on the town with your friends. Perhaps even squeeze in a little time for pampering so you don't burn out.

The dark side of Scorpio

Scorpios, born between October 23 and November 21, get a bad rap for their seriousness. But they're really soft and warm on the inside, just like all humans (after all, they're a water sign). Their short fuses and take-no-guff attitudes make them seem like a fire sign and put them toward the top of this list. Scorpios are also often hard to read, which makes people see them as more serious than they actually are.

As a fixed sign, Scorpio isn't much of a fan of change, but this isn't necessarily what makes them so serious. It's more likely their ruling planets that not only add to their darkness and mystery but also make them more resolved in their ways. Their vengeful side comes from the intensity of having Pluto as one of their two ruling planets — it's a planet of destruction, leading to new beginnings, of course. Fiery Mars also pushes Scorpio to be in touch with their aggressive side, which makes them serious about love, friendships, and career but also makes them someone whose bad side you don't necessarily want to get on.

Driven Aries

Aries — born between March 21 and April 19 — is another Mars-ruled sign, so you know that they have some extra fire burning deep inside them that pushes them to stay moving forward. As a fire sign, they're already driven and always striving to be bigger and better no matter who stands in their way. Aries tend to take themselves too seriously if they don't have someone in their life to teach them how to slow down and smell the flowers every once in a while.

As the first sign of the zodiac, Aries tend to take a leadership role, which makes them great at managing things (except time to relax and recharge), but not always as great at relating to people below them. And, like Capricorn, Aries is another determined and focused cardinal sign.

The four cardinal signs (Aries, Capricorn, Cancer, and Libra) like to be in control — they take charge, sometimes when no one even wants them to, unfortunately. For Aries, seriousness is about staying in motion, but you'll quickly learn that you can't enjoy life if you don't slow down once in a while. For Aries, vacations tend to be working things, and downtime is for making plans for tomorrow.

Immovable Taurus

It's not entirely fair to call Taurus stubborn, but they do tend to be immovable when they have their mind set on something, and it is difficult to make them see things your way. After all, they are an earth sign, grounded and set in their ways. They are a fixed sign, which means they're not good with change and could be one of the reasons they lean toward a stubborn demeanor. You're a Taurus if you were born between April 20 and May 20.

Taurus isn't big on emotions. Since they stand their ground, they usually get what they want, so there's no reason for them to get all emotional about it. If getting what they want means throwing out things and people that don't agree with them, to a Taurean, so be it.

When it comes to being a member of this serious sign, you want to remember that other people's opinions and emotions actually do matter. Opening yourself up to a little push and pull will open doors in your life that you were leaning against prior. Not everything needs to be serious, dear Taurus; let your guard down from time to time.

Analytical Virgo

And the other earth sign finds itself near the top half of this list because that's just how the cookie crumbles. If you were born between August 23 and September 22, you're a Virgo — one of the most practical of the zodiac signs. The reason you're not up as high as your other earth brethren is that you do have a soft side and tend to be a kind soul, sometimes opening you up to less-serious situations (though that doesn't mean you're not focused and determined when you need to be).

Virgo has that serious edge because they are driven and have a deep desire to put their all into everything they do. They like to analyze things, so they will work on that project from top to bottom, side to side, and then go over everything again just to be sure. Even so, they're eager to drop everything to help a friend out and put everything into that project just as they would their own.

While they're ready to help, they still take everything seriously, so it can be easy to see that focus as a negative even when they're focused on someone else's project. Just understand that Virgo is happiest when helping and getting things done.

Emotional Cancer

The emotions of water signs run deep, and Cancer is by far the most emotional of the zodiac signs because of this particular element. Though one would think such emotional depth would make someone more easy-going and understanding, Cancer left that trait for their partner in water Pisces. Instead, Cancer is a hard shell to crack, just like the crab that symbolizes them.

They have a turmoil of emotions inside and a tough exterior that blocks out things like small talk and keeps people at a distance because ... trust issues. It's not that Cancer doesn't want to get to know you and be more open; they just don't want to get hurt.

Born between June 22 and July 22, Cancer is the cardinal sign of the water elements. It's likely this quality that keeps them on the serious side of things and holds them back from letting their emotions visibly get the best of them. They prefer to keep those emotions under wraps and deeply held within themselves — once they're set free into the world, it can cause turmoil in all aspects of their life. If you fall under this sign, It's important to learn to express your emotions, whether it's in a journal or through therapy.

Confident Leo

While this is the point where the signs begin to lighten up, Leo is notorious for having their confidence mistaken for not only arrogance but also seriousness — that "king of the jungle" vibe they give off frightens many. They may be serious about looking good, but this sign isn't as stringent as many think they are. Born between July 23 and August 22, Leo's desire to conquer the world may appear to be a bit too much for some folks, but there's really just a cuddly pussy cat behind that roar.

Leos, à la the lion, have a proud exterior, but what hides beneath it is someone with a giant heart who devotes their all to romantic relationships. If you are loved by a Leo, they'll surely be serious about you in a big way, and that's a good thing. What makes Leo not that serious is that they enjoy being out on the town, hanging out with people, and they don't ever mind being in the limelight. So expect Leo to be partying it up, whether with a mate by their side or out prowling for one if they're single. How would you have time to be too serious if you're busy entertaining from the stage or the middle of the room?

Goofy Aquarius

It's time to leave the seriousness behind. Although Aquarius isn't all fun all the time, they do have a goofy side that can make spending time with them entertaining (or make you roll your eyes if you fit in one of the first six signs on this list). Born between January 20 and February 18, air-sign Aquarius sometimes has their head in the clouds — but they also use that thinking time to come up with plans for work and play.

A fixed sign like Scorpio and Taurus, Aquarius prefers to keep moving along the same path, but they try to have fun with it. Ruled by Uranus and Saturn, Aquarius is a hard worker but knows that freedom and fun are also equally important.

If you're an Aquarius, you are well-balanced when it comes to your work side with your playful side. You may have been the class clown as a child or the office jokester as an adult, but you know when it's time to put your nose to the grindstone too.

Easy-going Pisces

The fluid water sign Pisces may not be the life of the party or the class clown, but they do know how to relax when it's called for. This mutable sign born between February 19 and March 20 absolutely goes with the flow and has no fear of change — but they do have a dark and a light side.

That dark side is more likely to swim off and shut people out than sit back and enjoy the show. Because they don't mind following others and joining in on all the fun, they tend to be outgoing. Socially, everybody wants a Pisces around because, with them, the conversations will never die, and positivity is sure to flow through the room the entire time.

Ruled by Neptune, Pisces is the artist of the zodiac. As a creative and communicative individual, it's hard for Pisces to ever take anything too seriously. And when they are serious about something, it's not to the point of obsession. Instead, Pisces lets that need for control wash away like the tides of the ocean. Invite Pisces over any time you need some creative inspiration and a chance to relax and forget about all the stuff going on in the world.

Social Libra

Libra is the butterfly fluttering around any social situation and the type of person to always have an entourage of friends following them around. They are charisma personified: outgoing, always winning people over, and usually have an infectious smile that lights up an entire room.

Born anywhere from September 22 to October 23, Librans love people. The thing is, they want to be the person at the top of the heap, the one in charge, the one everyone looks up to, so they'll go out of their way to draw your attention and then draw you in. There's no seriousness here, just smiles.

As a cardinal sign, Libra is adaptable, so even a change in their friendship circle won't be enough to keep them from having fun. Ruled by Venus, they are lovers of life and the people they surround themselves with — and it's this need for love that ensures Libra will always find a new group of friends to lead and have fun with, even when someone can't handle their outgoing personality.

Fun-loving Gemini

Gemini may be known to harbor two personalities, but both of them enjoy having fun. They're not like the Pisces fish, one dark and one light — they're both bright and full of happy sunshine. Being a mutable sign, those born between May 21 and June 21 are flexible, so even if their plans for the evening change last minute, they always know where to go to have fun anyway. And it's hard to be serious when you like to have fun and are a zodiac sign that's always down to party.

That's another thing: Geminis are constantly moving, so they don't let anything trip them up. Their movement is about enjoying life and not pushing to be bigger and better (like Aries). Outgoing Gemini is ruled by Mercury, which makes them curious about people, trying new things, and going on adventures. Curiosity may kill the cat, but for Gemini, it is a way of life.

There's never a dull moment with this zodiac sign. Rather than sticking with any routine, which is too serious for them, they want to go wherever they feel on any length of a whim. And, once Gemini sets their mind to something, they'll do it. Otherwise, that restlessness takes over, and they struggle to find balance.

Comedic Sagittarius

If your birthday falls between November 22 and December 21, congrats! You're a Sagittarius, which means you take the award for being the absolute least serious zodiac sign. Sagittarians have a quip for everything and can't help but strive to make the people around them laugh — whether it's to break the ice, stop the tears, or lighten up a heavy room.

They're the ones with the never-ending list of jokes. They are the comedians of the zodiac for a reason. Of course, they struggle to understand when it isn't appropriate to joke around, but that is simply part of their charm. They also thrive in social situations because where else would they be able to make others laugh?

Sagittarius is also a mutable sign, just like Gemini. They are ruled by Jupiter, which gives Sagittarius a bit of an adventurous side, especially when it comes to meeting new people and getting along in crowds. They don't mind traveling, even alone, because they easily get along with others. They're also the perfect person to take on vacation with you if you want to ensure you have a blast. But don't tell them what to do, as they're not big fans of authority — rules are meant to be broken, and laughs are meant to be had!
