However, amidst all the controversy, there is a definitive answer to the highly debated question. The short answer is — yes, they are different, but why they are different is a much more complicated answer. Once you learn how aging plays a role in your hair color, you'll finally be able to settle the debate with others once and for all.

Dark blond and light brown are actually different

While the two colors are incredibly similar, they are, in fact, not the same. Dark blond and light brown are completely different — professionally speaking. Speaking to Bustle, Los Angeles-based hairstylist Fae Norris explained the difference between the two and why they differ. "Where I've seen the most confusion is around level seven," Norris told the publication. "This is where the towheads fall — those who were lighter blonde as young kids but their hair darkened with age." While "dark blond" looks dark, it's still officially classed as blond, but that's not all.

Norris adds that "it's something that's not really up for debate, according to the mass majority of color scales," which means that the answer is set in stone. Whether this supports your opinion or not, you now have some credible, trustworthy evidence to support the verdict of the viral TikTok debate.

How to identify if you're brunette or dark blond

If you're unsure of the own color of your own hair, you're not alone. If you're not a hairdresser, it's very easy to confuse the two. Thankfully, there is an effortless way to identify your hair color, although it may be difficult at first for the untrained eye. One method to tell the difference between a dark blond and a light brunette is by looking at the undertones of the hair, according to Lacer Hair. Whereas blonds have "warmer undertones," brunettes have "cooler" ones. This difference is what separates the two shades from one another.

Of course, if you're struggling to identify your undertones, another option is to go directly to a hairdresser and ask. Alternatively, you can try looking at professional color charts online and comparing your hair color, which may be a little more accessible and straightforward. Identifying your undertones will help you determine if you're, in fact, dark blond or brunette. Who knows? Perhaps you are dark blond, after all. In this case, if you want to go from blond to brown, it's relatively easy to do so.
